Boys Town, NE – A Rabbi’s Teachings On Recovery Find A Wide Audience

    They were walking through the village founded decades earlier by an immigrant priest, the Rev. Edward J. Flanagan, for what were then known as “wayward boys.” Father Boes is now the executive director of Boys Town, a place made iconic by the Spencer Tracy film named for it, and Rabbi Taub was a visitor with wisdom to share.

    For six years, Rabbi Taub, 37, has been teaching and writing about the spiritual component of recovery from addiction. He had begun within the Jewish community, specifically the Chabad movement, and yet providence or serendipity or destiny has brought him increasing recognition and influence well beyond it.

    So it was that Father Boes asked him to address a half-dozen staff members, some of them clergy and some of them therapists, who lead recovery programs at Boys Town. Once a refuge for children neglected or abandoned due primarily to poverty, it now deals extensively with boys and girls who have abused alcohol and drugs. And while Boys Town from its origin had been nondenominational and opposed to religious compulsion of any kind, it has always considered faith a central element for repairing damaged lives.

    Over the course of 90 minutes with the Boys Town staff members, Rabbi Taub spoke of the Talmud, “Hamlet,” the Exodus narrative and the metaphor of the canary in the coal mine. He told jokes from the recovery movement’s borscht belt. (Q: What’s the last thing that happens before a co-dependent person dies? A: He sees someone else’s life flash before his eyes.)

    Tying together the whole discourse was Rabbi Taub’s thesis, the central insight of his teaching and writing. Addiction, he argues, is less a chemical dependency or a mental illness than the consequence of an individual’s absence from God and of the psychic pain that absence inflicts.

    “The substance isn’t the addict’s problem,” Rabbi Taub put it at one point in his talk. “The substance is the addict’s best attempt at a solution.” The only true solution, he went on, is “a personal God experience,” a spiritual breakthrough that supplies “the deep-seated need for union with God.”

    In saying overtly what the recovery movement often leaves deliberately ambiguous — the 12 Steps of Alcoholics Anonymous refer to a “Higher Power” without defining it — Rabbi Taub has become a phenomenon. Even as he is anchored within the Hasidic world, he has transcended it, first by reaching unaffiliated and secular Jews and then, most unexpectedly, by finding an eager audience among Christians.

    Rabbi Taub’s 2011 book, “God of Our Understanding: Jewish Spirituality and Recovery from Addiction,” has just gone into its 10th printing. He recently delivered the keynote address, “God and Recovery,” to a national conference on addiction treatment. He edits JewishRecovery.org, a Chabad Web site, and writes regularly for The Huffington Post on topics like the death of Amy Winehouse, the pop singer who had struggled with drugs and alcohol. His avid followers include the pastor of an evangelical megachurch in Alabama and the chaplain who runs a skid-row mission in Atlantic City.

    It is all a long way from childhood in a conventionally observant Jewish household in Chicago, the son of a psychologist and a speech pathologist, and an even longer way from young adulthood in the Crown Heights section of Brooklyn, where Rabbi Taub received his rabbinic education and ordination. This unanticipated journey into the gentile world has required some very precise ground rules on Rabbi Taub’s part.

    “I have to be careful with each relationship that I don’t promise what I can’t deliver,” Rabbi Taub put it a few days after his Boys Town lecture. “It’s not about interfaith. I have zero interest in finding common theological ground. I’m a Jew who’s been able to study my tradition, and I have information, and I can be helpful to the extent I can share the information.”

    Without any formal training in addiction treatment, Rabbi Taub entered the field experientially in 2006, leading a weekly group at a Chabad House in Milwaukee for Jewish men in recovery. Through the efforts he was struck by how many of the men had become observant in the course of getting clean and sober. He considered that turns of events no coincidence.

    In the next several years, as he began to conduct research into addiction treatment, Rabbi Taub made a surprising and affirming discovery. It was a 1961 letter from Carl Jung to Bill Wilson, one of the founders of Alcoholics Anonymous. In it, Jung, the legendary psychiatrist, directly recommended “union with God” as essential to recovery.

    “Alcohol in Latin is ‘spiritus,’ ” Jung wrote, “and you use the same word for the highest religious experience as well as for the most depraving poison. The helpful formula therefore is: spiritus contra spiritum.” (The approximate translation would be spirituality against spirits of the alcoholic sort.)

    When a National Public Radio reporter profiled Rabbi Taub in 2009, he mentioned, rather prematurely, that he was writing a book. With the sound bite in the public record, Rabbi Taub then had to make good on the promise, and “God of Our Understanding” is the result.

    Rooted in Judaic text and tradition — from the Torah to Hasidic folk tales — the book paradoxically has become the rabbi’s calling card in settings as unlikely as Boys Town. And whatever culture shock the rabbi embodied in his fedora and flowing beard, his lessons required no translation.

    “I think he articulated the things I’ve always felt are true,” said one of his listeners there, Elizabeth Potter, a therapist who is the daughter of an evangelical minister. “I’ve always felt spirituality is the key component of any counseling. That there is a God, and that there is hope.”

    Feel-good reporting, for a change. A breath of air in a stale environment. Kudos to leaders who mean what they say, say what they mean, do it with heart and with no ulterior motives.

    You are right. I only wish this article would start off by identifying Rabbi Taub as a Chabad / Lubavitch rabbi intead of a Hasidic rabbi.

    Gentiles should study Torah related to their Mitzvot, for they must study the details of their Mitzvot in order to be able to put them into practice. It may be said that their obligation to study the Noahide Code is not merely a “preparation for a Mitzvah,” but an obligation in its own right.

    The reason for this is that along with the duty to adhere to the Noahide Code, they are obligated to keep these Mitzvot in a regular, natural manner, which necessitates previous study of the specific laws related to these Mitzvot. Thus, this study is not merely a “preparation for a Mitzvah,” but one of the Mitzvot in their own right, for otherwise [the Noahide Code] cannot be observed. Thus, this study has the halachic status of Torah study.

    Its ironic that we so vehemently disagree with Karl Marx on almost ever subject (I for one am an ardent capitalist), but somehow we are now accepting and even promoting the idea that religion is the opiate of the masses (albeit portrayed as a good opiate that can flush the bad opiates from the system) but an opiate nonetheless.

    What’s worse is that the hangover from religious opiates doesn’t just pain the user… As we have seen in Beit Shemesh, New Square (lighting someone on fire because he didn’t daven at your shul….come on!), meah shaarim. Not to mention virtually every muslim country… Before anyone jumps down my throat about how awful communism, a godless philosophy, killed more people than any religion, (I agree with them, about the damage that caused), but I reply that communism and atheism/agnosticism are religions without a mystical deity (they do have their gods as well though).

    #3 why so many positive stories about chabad..
    Well when you have over 4000 Rabbis/ shluchim worldwide dedicated daily to bring more torah , mitzvos and goodness in to the world, to yidden and also many times to goyim as it states u should be a light unto the nations… Then the answer is a no brainer.
    To #4 btw the baal shem tov the founder of Chassidim used to go from city to city to inspire the most simple people..
    So i guess chabad is following the hasidic path..

    there r over a million of religious jews that r inspired by religion to do so much good daily acts of kindness and charity etc..

    And u bring a point based on a few wackos representing much less than 1% of the religious jewish population?

    Torah and GD r true and perfect, people r not.. Dont judge GD by a few hotheaded individuals

    There are enough frum kids – and adults – who need therapy and return to Hashem. Since when did our previous Rabbonim & shluchei d’rachmana bond & teach goyim? This union with the Christians is all about money. Chabad does many good things, but this one is about money. Does anyone know how much he was paid for this?
