This is the sixth consecutive year that the Brooklyn DA’s office has organized an Extraordinary Women campaign, paying tribute to local residents by recognizing their selfless actions during March which is also Women’s History Month.

Among the women recognized at a special ceremony this morning held at the Kings County DA’s office were Williamsburg resident Sarah Sander, a staunch advocate for Downs Syndrome children, Midwood resident Chavie Glustein, founder of BINA, and Borough Park resident Esther Friedman, a dedicated volunteer at Maimonides Medical Center.

An oversized calendar for the month of March, bearing the pictures of all the honorees was unveiled this morning in the lobby of 350 Jay Street, with one day of the month dedicated to each of the thirty two women, including a mother daughter pair being honored together. The thirty third honoree was honored with the DA’s Choice Award. Each of the women is designated as a Special Ambassador to her community and they will be further honored at a ceremony to take place on March 27th at the Supreme Court building. The thirty three honorees were selected from the approximately one hundred nominations received this year by a special committee from the Brooklyn DA’soffice and by previous honorees.

Williamsburg resident Sarah Sander, the mother of a twenty year old son with Downs Syndrome who not only mentors families with Down Syndrome children but created a magazine called Downs Syndrome Amongst Us. She also founded the first yeshiva program for Downs Syndrome children to be housed in a mainstream yeshiva, called Bonim Lamakom, which is located in Yeshiva Torah Vodaath and currently has an enrollment of approximately forty five boys, ages six and up.

“I was reluctant to accept this honor, but I wanted other women to realize that regular people, like me and like them, have the ability to bring about change” Mrs. Sander told VIN News. “I was just an ordinary woman when my son was born, but when you are thrown into circumstances like these, you do what you need to do. Sometimes in life you are faced with challenges, but you can’t give up, you can’t throw in the towel, you have to rise to the occasion and I hope that other women will be inspired to meet their challenges head on.”

Chavie Glustein is the founder of BINA Stroke and Brain Injury Assistance, created after a close family member suffered a stroke at a young age. After five years of learning to navigate the system, the Midwood resident decided to use her expertise by assisting others in similar situations and to date BINA has provided invaluable assistance to over one thousand victims of stroke and brain injury, many of whom live in Brooklyn. BINA is the only Jewish organization specializing in brain injury which can strike victims of car accidents, strokes, skiing accidents and falls. It has been widely acclaimed by brain injury specialists and Mrs. Glustein has personally visited over one hundred rehabilitation facilities, met with specialists and therapists and attends medical conference all across the United States.

“It was a wonderful opportunity to meet other women who have accomplished so much within their communities,” said Mrs. Glustein. “It was heartwarming to share in each other’s life experiences.”

Now a grandmother, Esther Friedman has been visiting hospitalized patients since she accompanied her own grandmother at age ten on her mitzvah rounds at a local hospital. The Borough Park resident began volunteering at Maimonides Medical Center after moving to Brooklyn from the Lower East Side in 1970 and to this day, she continues to provide homemade cholent and other Shabbos food to Jewish patients as well as homemade white tablecloths sized to fit hospital bed trays. Mrs. Freidman uses her talents to chair both the Zichron Shlome Refuah Fund and Hatzalah’s annual Chinese Auctions and was recognized by Maimonides at their recent centennial as a long standing volunteer.

I remember when I had my baby in maimonides; freezing cold shabbos, Mrs. Friedman was there with shabbos seuda food. These women did their chessed lesheim shamayim and happened to receive honor for it at the end. How special. As opposed to other women we’ve been reading about recently that bring their “chessed’ and organizations to the New York Post and first look for the fame and then mix a bit of lesheim shamayim into it so it sounds real.

I wasnt surprised to read about Esther Friedman. Mitzvas run in her family. One can get dizzy watching her run from one mitzva to the next. She is involved in so many organizations, to mention all would take all day. She doesnt only take chulent to Maimonides on Shabbos. She talks to the patients and gives them chizuk, she talks to them as if they are the ONLY person she is visiting, when in reality she visits the entire hospital. Esther also sews tzniousdige hospital gowns and gives them to anyone who asks for it. Im honored to be a friend of Esther Friedman.

Weird i never noticed….just when is men’s history month? Are there any special honors reserved only for men or is that racist?

This is terrific. Lately the news has been loaded with tons of negative news. We know that there are so many fabulous people doing good in the community, I’m happy that it’s being published. Hatzlocha to all your future endeavors.

Mrs. Friedman – a Tzadekes. I remember her and her sister, Mrs. Fischman, literally angels from heaven, while I was in the hospital. Thank you, thank you. May haShem bless you for every portion of food prepared, cooked, and that you have brought to patients every Friday night. Hundreds of thousands of potions through the years. Hundreds of thousands of brachas upon you and your entire family.

What in the world is the ‘District Attorney’ doing “Giving Out Kibudim”?

Since when has anyone EVER heard of ANY DA, anywhere on earth, to be “giving out kibudim” to anyone???

The job of the District Attorney is to prosecute CRIMINALS and no to “Give Out Kibudim” to anyone at all.

    Ela Mai?

The DA is under FIRE, in Albany right now!

The DA is now accuesed in Albany, that he has not adequately prosecuted criminal child molesters in our frum community.

The DA could be / should be, investigated, criminally and charged himself + the DA stands to loose Jewish votes, if found guilty and therefor instead of the DA, just DOING HIS JOB to run after criminals, he chooses instead to “Give a Kidush in Shull” and give out Kibudim, right and left, to buy himself Friends who will reciprocate and say good about him, even when he is currently accused in Albany, with not doing his job properly.

Im so proud to be a sister to Esther Friedman!!!!!!!! To #4 you are so correct. To list everything that Esther does would take all day. Be it collecting money for a poor kalla, to bake/cook food for a poor family, to accompany someone to the hospital for treatments, to organize a school party.to “shnore” prizes for Zichron Shloma Refua Fund chinese action… The list goes on and on. The nicest thing is, her family is also involved when it comes to do mitzvas. On Shabbos morning you can see her children/grandchildren help her pack the food to be taken to Maimonides Hospital. Rain or shine, Esther Friedman is there to help anyone and everyone!!!! Bravo!!! May Hashem bentch her and her family with kol tov!!!

Kudos to Çhavi Gluestein! Being that Bina services specifically stroke and brain injury their organization is not that well known to the general public. A # of years ago a family member suffered a stroke and this was a new world for us. Brain injury is a complete medical world of its own and I can truly say that we would have been lost without Binah. They were there for us throughout, always with a smile! Chavi Gluesteins guideance and assistance was invaluable. Thanks Chavi and may Hashem continue giving you the strength to keep helping others!
