The two coins to be issued March 15 by the National Bank of Poland honor the Ulma, Kowalski and Baranek families. The coins come in denominations of two zlotys, worth about 65 cents, and 20 zlotys, worth about $6.50.

On March 15, 1943, German auxiliary police discovered eight Jews hidden in the home of Wincenty and Łucja Baranek in the village of Siedliska. The police killed the Jews immediately and then shot the Baraneks and their two sons in the backs of their heads.

Adam and Bronisława Kowalski hid two Jewish neighbors in their house in the village of Ciepielow. Other Jews were hidden in other homes in the village.

G-d bless the nation that remembers the Holocaust and acts of those who acted to save others. May they find a place among the righteous.

I am sure that this would be a nice thing that many of our people might want to have as a collectors item. I would certainly like to get a coin of each. I wonder if they will be on sale nationally. This sounds like a very intelligently designed coin that will bring peace and prosperity to the nation.

I wonder if the Iranians will acknowledge the coins since according to them the holocaust never happened.

To all the ignorant Pole-bashers above, I realize that it’s a become part of the frum Jew’s mindset to want to believe everyone hates us, but as the following passage from Wikipedia attests, Poles risked their lives to save Jews in extraordinary numbers. And Poles are by far the greatest percentage of Righteous Among the Nations honored at Yad Vashem. (I wonder how many Jews would shelter non-Jews if the situation were reversed?)
” At a 1979 international historical conference dedicated to Holocaust rescuers, J. Friedman said in reference to Poland: ‘If we knew the names of all the noble people who risked their lives to save the Jews, the area around Yad Vashem would be full of trees and would turn into a forest.’
Hans G. Furth holds that the number of Poles who helped Jews is greatly underestimated and there might have been as many as 1,200,000 Polish rescuers. Władysław Bartoszewski, a wartime member of Żegota, estimates that “at least several hundred thousand Poles… participated in various ways and forms in the rescue action.” Recent research supports estimates that about a million Poles were involved in such rescue efforts, but some estimates go as high as 3 million.”
