New York - A New York state lawmaker is looking to put Tasers in the hands of transit workers.

Sen. Eric Adams proposed legislation letting MTA bus drivers and subway conductors carry Tasers.

Adams, a retired NYPD captain, is renewing the push following a rise in assaults on transit workers. There were 94 attacks on transit crews last year, up from 72 the year before, according to the Daily News.

Has he completely taken leave of his senses? Does that publicity-seeking idiot know the damage (not to mention the death c"v) Tasers could cause?

Never going to happen! Cheaper to install partitions, compared to buying them, training our drivers and potential lawsuit.
Some of our buses already have partitions. Most assaults I have responded to could have been stopped by a partition.
When I used to drive overnight shift I carried a big screwdriver ( sometimes some screws come loose ;-)

Look how low politicians will go to have their name in the press.

You're being sarcastic, right?
You can't kill someone with a taser.

As a victim of a mugging in NYC, I asked the cops what I can do to protect myself. I was told- nothing much and if we catch you with a taser, mace, or pepper spray--- you would be the one to get in trouble. For just trying to protect yourself.
We should all be allowed to own tasers. I want to be able to protect myself.
And it wont kill- unless they have a heart condition (and then they shouldnt be mugging anyone anyways).

They should also give them to ticket agents. That way next time Senator Adams attacks one of them he can get tased.

I would like to have that authority as well.

Why is the Government and its workers arming themselves with all kinds of powers and the highest paying jobs/benefits while we work our way to the bottom.

Communism, anyone?

Don't we already have thousands of transit cops who are supposed to be curtailing crime in our transit system? If they can't handle the job and there is a need to arm civilians with tasers then we should rethink the entire Transportation Bureau.

You can, you definitely can.

Tasers, as well as other high-voltage stun devices, can cause cardiac arrhythmia in susceptible subjects, possibly leading to heart attack or death in minutes by ventricular fibrillation, which leads to cardiac arrest and - if not treated immediately - to sudden death.

People susceptible to this outcome are sometimes healthy and unaware of their susceptibility.

Although the medical conditions or use of illegal drugs among some of the casualties may have been the proximate cause of death, the electric shock of the Taser can significantly heighten such risk for subjects in an at-risk category. This suggests that Tasers and other electroshock weapons would be dangerous to use on people with certain medical conditions and yet, since police officers will typically not know about a person's medical history or possible drug use, this entails a risk of death with virtually any suspect.

Yet another very good candidate for the 2012 Shmendrik Award!

Where should priority be: the safety of violent attackers of transit workers or the safety of transit workers?
