Born Ben-Zion Mileikowsky in Warsaw, Poland, Netanyahu was a devout follower of revisionist Zionist leader Zeev Jabotinsky, who advocated Jewish military strength and opposed partitioning Palestine between Arabs and Jews. Netanyahu served as his personal aide until Jabotinsky’s death in 1940.

He then edited right-wing Jewish publications and earned a Ph.D in history from Dropsie College in Philadelphia, a center of Jewish learning that was later incorporated into the University of Pennsylvania. Later, he was a professor of Jewish history and Hebrew literature at the University of Denver and Cornell University, where he served as chairman of the department of Semitic languages and literature. He was the editor-in-chief of the Hebrew Encyclopedia for more than a decade.

He was best known in academic circles for his research into the medieval inquisition against the Jews of Spain.

His academic career had his family shuttling between the United States and Israel. He met with many Jewish leaders of the period, as well as with U.S. senators, Congressional representatives, poets and leaders, including Dwight D. Eisenhower.

Netanyahu and his wife, Tzila, had three sons: Yonatan, Benjamin and Iddo, all of whom served in the same elite military commando unit, Sayeret Matkal. Yonatan was killed while commanding the daring 1976 rescue of more than 100 Jewish and Israeli hostages on board an Air France jet in Entebbe, Uganda.

Following his son’s death, Netanyahu returned to Israel full-time. His middle son, Benjamin, entered politics and was elected prime minister of Israel in 1996 and again in 2009. Iddo, the youngest of the three, is a radiologist and writer.

Netanyahu is believed to have had great influence over his son’s politics and openly criticized him when his government made concessions toward the Palestinians.

Several analysts have speculated that Benjamin Netanyahu was emotionally unable to sign off on a comprehensive peace deal with Israel’s Arabs neighbors as long as his father was still alive, a notion the prime minister dismissed as “psychobabble.”

In newspaper interviews late in life, Ben-Zion Netanyahu forcefully questioned the feasibility of Mideast peace.

“The tendency to conflict is in the essence of the Arab. He is an enemy by essence. His personality won’t allow him any compromise or agreement. It doesn’t matter what kind of resistance he will meet, what price he will pay. His existence is one of perpetual war,” he told the Maariv daily in 2009. “The Arab citizens’ goal is to destroy us. They don’t deny that they want to destroy us.”y don’t deny that they want to destroy us.”

He was the only semi-public figure with the guts to speak the truth about the Arabs.

What was so great about him?
Totally secular, he wrote a whole
Thesis besmirching the Marranos , something that went against all of the accepted Torah view.
He might have been a nice person , but a great Jew is one who is totally immersed in Torah and chesed.
What makes it worse is that he was no bleeding heart liberal , that you can’t even discuss he was right wing . A right winger should also take Torah into account. I am by no means judging him he grew up in secular Poland then immigrated to Palestine under secular influence , not much can be expected of him , in regards to Torah , however great he was not . Let’s not Lise our perspective on greatness

    Kudos to visionaies
This comment I wrote I tried to also put on another “frum” website but they would not post it , which makes me wonder how frum are they really?
I’m not apologetic at all you can write all you want against me, however if you truly believe in toras hashem you would realize that what I wrote is elementary.
Nobody is taking this man to task about his observance the idea is that we have to know what is real greatness and greatness devoid of Torah is not greatness period! No one claims he is bad or evil , we cannot allow our Torah view to be convoluted that’s it.

Baruch Dayan HaEmes. We should all take heed at the late Prof. Netanyahu’s words. He has spoken the truth about the Arabs and their desire to wipe Israel of the face of the earth, along with all the Yidden. Read what he says and understand as he understood the Arab mentality. My condolences to the Prime Minister and his family and please do not stray from your fathers path. follow closely and he will guide you to success. Remember the words of the Tzaddik HaRav Meir Kahane z”TL NEVER AGAIN!

To #5 -Dave- Recently, I attended a lecture at our local Kollel, whereby one of the Kollel Rabbis stated that one of the greatest sins, is to verbally attack a deceased person’s lack of Torah knowledge. How dare you spread your vitriolic message of loshon hora on this site! A SHANDA!!

Blessed be his memory. Benjamin is coming from an outstanding family.
Ben Zion was close to Zeev Zhabotinsky. That says a lot to me. Those who read Zhabotinsky writings and followed his deeds particularly in trying to create a Jewish army not just a Jewish legion before World War II realize what an outstanding person and visionary he was. So someone who was close and respected by Zeev had to be a great person. Also he brought up sons like Yoni and Benjamin!

I did not read his works on Spanish Jewry but I am sure that he was a very learned man with inquisitive bright and creative mind, hard worker, thinker and very brave.

Thanks goodness his views helped to shape his sons view of the world, love for Israel and Jewish people.

Baruch Dayan Emes. I can’t believe that people are saying that he couldn’t be great bc he wasn’t their brand of “frum.” He fulfilled the mitzva of living in Eretz Yisrael for one, which probably none of the readers on this website has done.

The niftar’s father was a talmid at the yeshiva in Volozhin and had semicha from there. While Mr. Netanyahu and his son the Prime Minister may not be fully torah observant, we see Bibi’s son last year won the Chidon T’nach, knowing more torah and navi than ANYBODY in the contest from everywhere in the world.

    Come on people
Nobody is saying nasty things about him
A point was brought up if it’s right , being we are Torah Jews to call him great that’s it you have to cool down a bit
