New York – As the outrage over Jacob Ostreicher’s imprisonment in Boliva continues to build, a New York U.S. senator has called upon the Bolivian ambassador to the United States to intervene on behalf of the jailed Brooklyn businessman.

In a letter sent today to General Freddy Bersatti Tudela at the Bolivian embassy in Washington DC today, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand expressed her concern about the lengthy legal wrangling in the Ostreicher case, which has included twelve cancelled hearings and several different judges but has so far not included giving Ostreicher the opportunity to defend himself in court, despite his eleven month incarceration.

Senator Gillibrand cited Ostreicher’s poor health and the hunger strike that he has recently undertaken in order to draw attention to the injustice in his case and requested that Bolivia not tarnish its reputation in the international community by depriving Ostreicher of the opportunity to defend himself in a proper legal venue.

“I am deeply concerned by the treatment of Mr. Ostreicher who has been held without a full hearing and denied the ability to practice his religious beliefs,” said Senator Gillibrand in a statement released to VIN News. “I am hopeful that he will be given a chance to present his defense and refute these charges in court without any further delay.”

No charges have been filed against him and he is essentially being held hostage. We need your help to get Jacob free and back with his family. Please see the attached link to a recent Nightline piece that outlines Jacob’s horrific story and then please take a moment to sign the petition on the site. This petition will let the White House know of Jacob’s plight and with G-d’s help he will be released. 25,000 signatures are needed, so please participate in this tremendous mitzvah and forward to as many people as possible. I urge all of you to get immediately involved in this case of Pidyon Shvuyim (freeing of prisoners).

While indeed there is no question about his innocence and that this is a tremendous outrage, I do have one important question: Who, if anyone, gave Mr. Ostreicher a “Hetter” to endanger his life (from which some have never recovered) by practicing a hunger-strike?
This is the one tactic I would not support.
The RAMBAM (probably it’s in the Talmud) rules that a person that was unfortunately kidnapped and sold into slavery may NOT attempt to escape if by doing so he puts his life in jeopardy!
    I’m aware of possible answers:
    1) He did in fact get a Hetter.
    2) The Hetter may be based on the premise that his life is in immediate danger anyway. Although it didn’t seem that way (as long as he stays indoors at night) from his interview on the News-clip 3 days ago from ABC news, posted on VIN.
    3) He is nebich so distraught that he’s not thinking clearly.

    In any case, Hashem Yirachem.

And Rabosei, please, no more investments in Bolivia! It’s too risky and frankly they don’t deserve it!

I signed the petition last night. It hasn’t yet reached 10,000 people. That means at least 30,000 people who signed for Rubashkin have not yet signed for Ostreicher.

Come on people. Get your priorities straight and sign the petition now. There’s no reason why Ostreicher should suffer more just because he did not hire PR firms (as Rubashkin did).

I’m glad to see Sen Gillibrand writing this letter. I know that I (and am certain MANY others) have written to her about this matter, and I’m happy to see that our efforts actually made an impact.
I hope the other politicians we’ve been contacting will do the same.

Why does the petition for Yanky Ostreicher have only 10,000 signatures after half a month?? I don’t understand how people can ignore the anguish of a heimish family in their time of need. All it takes is a minute, a minute while sitting in the comfort of your home/office.

Stop a minute and think the of Yanky’s pain, sitting in prison helpless among murderers. If it would chas v’sholom be your father, father-in-law, brother etc. would you pass it on without thought?? Yanky is your fellow YId and if not us Yidden who will care for him and his family???

Please, please everyone, go now to http://www.freejacobnow.com and sign the petition for Yanky Ostreicher.
