New York – Economic Report: US Must Compete For Immigrants

New York – A report released Tuesday from a group co-chaired by Mayor Michael Bloomberg says the United States needs to change its immigration system to attract the immigrants who can contribute the most to the nation’s economy or else it risks losing ground to other countries.

The report was issued by the Partnership for a New American Economy, the mayor’s group, along with the Partnership for New York City, a coalition of business leaders.

The United States’ immigration system doesn’t match its economic needs, the report says, and needs to be reformed. It recommended steps including fast-tracking permanent visas for immigrants who have advanced degrees in such areas as science, technology, engineering and mathematics and visas for foreign students who are studying for their advanced degrees in American universities. It also called for allowing regions around the country to determine their own immigration needs and programs.

“America has always been a magnet for the world’s most talented and hardest working — our success has been built on immigrants who have powered our industries and started new ventures that today rank among the world’s leading companies,” Bloomberg said in a statement marking the report’s release.

“But we are quickly losing our edge as other countries adopt smarter economic-driven immigration policies,” he said. “The future is on the line — now is the time to reform the system and welcome the workers who will continue our success as the world’s leading economy.”

The report also calls for the creation of new visas aimed at investors looking to places to put their money and entrepreneurs looking to start businesses.

Bloomberg has spoken before on the need for reforming the immigration system.

We need to allow more manual labor as well. Don’t kid yourselves, Americans are not taking these jobs.

Look, we have enough problems in this country, without taking in more immigrants. After 9/11/01, ALL immigration to the USA, both legal, and otherwise, should have ceased. The population has doubled, in the last 45 years. We no longer have the frontier to settle. Let us take care of our own first, without having to worry about immigrants, who can cause further problems. For example, a number of immigrants have settled recently, from Iraq and other muslim countries. They bring with them beliefs in honor killing, and in fact, have committed a number of heinous crimes, because they perceived that their daughters were becoming “too westernized”. We don’t need such deviants coming to our shores.

I don’t get it. What about all the unemployed PhD’s in this country? Do they need even more job competition?

Yes, that’s the major problem, we don’t have enough immigrants.

What does he even mean “compete” for highly trained immigrants? Are they going somewhere else? The developing nations complain that they have a brain drain; are their best and brightest going to Europe and Japan instead of here?
