Jerusalem – Charedi Woman Gives Birth During Vow Of Silence, Hiding Newborn

    60

(File Photo AP)Jerusalem – A woman who gave birth alone in her Jerusalem home over the weekend hid the baby under her dress, umbilical cord intact and placenta hidden in a bag next to her bed, and refused to tell anyone about the birth or allow paramedics to examine the baby, because she had pledged not to speak until Shabbat ended Saturday night.

Police and paramedics eventually wrested the infant away from his mother, an ultra-Orthodox woman in her 30s who lives in the Jerusalem neighborhood of Givat Shaul, because they were concerned she was endangering his life. The woman had refused to tell anyone she had given birth to the baby Saturday morning, while her husband was at synagogue, because she did not want to break her vow of silence.

People need to evaluate what Hashem really wants from them. There is a time and a place for everything and we are supposed to use the faculties Hashem gave us to make appropriate decisions, not to allow misguided worship warp our faculties.

The gedolim have to give some guidance – these people have no idea of Torah normalcy. They’ve eradicated the 4th brocha from the shmoneh esray – chonen l’adam daas – instead ladam tipshus etc

Her and the husband who flagged down the tow truck driver in Harlem should get together. Seems like a good shidduch.

G-d does not accept vows as you know from Kol Nidre. A vow of silence is not an excuse for a vow of hatchetry as this vow has become for her.

Vow of silence? Has anyone heard of this? What could she have been thinking she was doing? Can anyone explain with facts?

It sounds like she has some serious mental health issues. A complete physical and psychiatric exam is in order to see what help she needs.

I’ll say the same comment as I said with the truck driver story…
Huh? What are they teaching or learning in yeshivos these days? Certainly NOT HALOCHOUS! and definetly not Chassidus. Either would (should) have taught what was the right thing to do in situations!

To #19 Unfortunately our shayne yiddin make a point of discriminating against adopted children. I have seen it personally in our fine Yeshivas right here in Flatbush and also in our Day camps. The name calling the kids go through!! It is heartbreaking and the name come out of the kids mouths but they are learned at HOME!! Something has to be done about it. Then 30 and 40 years later, we wonder where are our Jews? You do the chasing yourselves!! These kids have been converted kosher, orthodox, with kosher Aydim, and what does this community do– chase them away!! TRAGEDY!!

This is the definition of a Chosid Shoiteh. If the baby would die, she would be guilty of Shfichas Domim and no vows, sigufim or taneisim would be mechaper for that.
Also, if my mother wouldn’t talk to me on shabbos I would grow up resenting shabbos, where is the oneg shabbos that her family deserves.

This story and yesterdays story of the woman giving birth in a cab also remind me of a story that I read a couple of years ago – where a yeshivish couple were living in a basement apartment with their children. The flame on the stove went out, but the gas jet was till going. The husband refused to turn off the valve, nor would he allow his wife to do it. They were staying there with kids while the entire apt reeked of gas. Luckily someone from upstairs managed to get in and shut it off and averted a possible tragedy. What is wrong with the yeshivish world, where in the name of Torah, you produce such blatant idiots? I have the answer – if the people leading and guiding them have no seichel, how should they have any?

It’s interesting and very sad to see how Chassidic Judaism is becoming more twisted and cult-like by too many people by the day. It’s time for the so called Rebbe’s to speak up and educate their people to be balanced.

This is completely insane. Besides, who ever heard of a Jewish woman taking a vow of silence?

This is all too ridiculous. The woman needs to be admitted to a psychiatric facility for a full examination and until she can be declared fit the baby should be taken into care.

This has nothing to do with religion and everything to do with psychiatric illness.
