Williamsburg, Brooklyn, NY – According to ABC News, there are at least twenty other bridges in the U.S. in worse structural shape than the I-135 that collapsed in Minnesota. The Minnesota bridge carried about 120,000 travelers per day, yet National Bridge Inventory data reveal that those 20 structurally deficient ones bear more than 190,000 daily commuters.

It is interesting to note, that the Lee Avenue overpass, at Rodney Street in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, has promiment status in the dangerous listing. The Lee Avenue Bridge (Section A) over Route I-278, with a daily commuter load of 202,650, ranks in as one the top five worst bridges, with only a 32% sufficiency rating. The engineers have included the bridge twice in the urgently repair list, the second time for Section C of the bridge – which carries a somewhat improved 49% sufficiency grade.
Vos Iz Neias have contacted the NYS Department of Transportation who assured us that the last inspection date was in 2006, and there were no red flags raised for this bridge. It is absolutely safe for commuters, they claim, and in no danger of collapsing at all. They added they have no idea why ABC News made such a claim.
