(AP Photo/Toby Talbot)New York, NY - A new report shows that one in eight New York City children has been diagnosed with asthma.
That’s worse than the national rate, which is about 1 in 10.
The New York City Health Department says poor children are especially vulnerable.
In East Harlem, children are 13 times more likely to go to the emergency room because of asthma than those on the Upper East Side.
The report found that 177,000 children 12 years and younger were diagnosed with asthma at some point in their lives.
The Wall Street Journal (http://on.wsj.com/NxSFzs ) reported Wednesday that the numbers are based on a 2009 survey. It says it’s the first time the agency has estimated the number of children suffering from the respiratory disease.

It has been well-established that having dogs and cats significantly reduces childhood asthma.

“ It has been well-established that having dogs and cats significantly reduces childhood asthma. ”
I have heard this too.
Also, because kids today spend so much time indoors when they are young, their immune systems are weaker and less prepared to deal with the irritants that cause issues such as asthma and allergies.
My physician always tells parents NOT to use anti-bacterial wipes on their children's things because kids need to be exposed to germs when they are young in order to have a healthy immune system. He is also very wary of prescribing antibiotics for children as well for the same reason.
Developing children NEED to be exposed to irritants and allergens from birth in order to develop properly.
Sadly, too many of these kids live in VERY polluted areas (like most of Brooklyn) where you can cut the air with a knife. So, spending more time outside may not be much better...
