Washington - White House spokesman Josh Earnest on Monday said that US Republican Presidential candidate Mitt Romney’s unqualified comments about Jerusalem as solely Israel’s capital was causing many to “scratch their heads.”

Earnest further said that Romney would need to explain himself to the general public.

Pressed further in the briefing, Earnest added that , “Well, our view is that that’s a different position than this administration holds. It’s the view of this administration that the capital is something that should be determined in final status negotiations between the parties.”

But Earnest did not leave the point only at the idea of the parties themselves determining their borders consensually. Rather, he added that, “I’d remind you that that’s the position that’s been held by previous administrations, both Democratic and Republican. So if Mr. Romney disagrees with that position, he’s also disagreeing with the position that was taken by Presidents like Bill Clinton and Ronald Reagan.”

Well, chocham, maybe you'd be correct in that assertion!

Romney's statement is in line with a law passed by Congress in 1995. Presidents since then, including Obama, Bush and Clinton have ignored the law, invoking a security waver. We know that Democrats are no friends of Israel, but it points to Bush's failed Presidency. 9/11 was the time for Bush to let the world know that Arab terror would no longer be accepted. Instead, he dawdled and then attacked Sadam Hussein who was in fact the counterweight to the spreading Islamists.

Obama campaigned in 2008 on a promise that "Jerusalem will remain the capital of Israel, and it must remain undivided."

(1999) First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton says she considers Jerusalem to be the eternal and indivisible capital of Israel and will be an active advocate if elected to New Yorks Senate seat to move the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

In a letter to the Rabbinical Council of America on June 14, 1992, candidate Bill Clinton wrote: `I recognize Jerusalem as an undivided city and the eternal capital of Israel."

So yes, at least two US Presidents took the position that Jerusalem is Israel's capital. However, they took those positions when they were candidates, not once they gained office. Romney is not doing anything that has not been done before. It remains to be seen whether he will caryy through on this if and when he is elected.

Lion, it goes even further. The land that the US owns in Israel where the embassy would be is in "1948" Jerusalem, not post '67. So there would be no reason not to have it there, in Israel stated capital, unless the US is worried about insulting those who don't recognize 1948 Jerusalem either!

Let me spell this out for the blind liberals out there....Israel chose its capital, it's in Jerusalem. Only those that want the total destruction of Israel would be "offended" by an embassy being in 1948 Jerusalem.

It's not the first time and not the last time that Obama will find himself "Scratching his Head".

He will be Scratching his Head a lot more when he wakes up on Election day, surprised as to why he lost the election, although he was so sure that the economy was doing just fine.

Remains to be seen? You know the answer, this is only to gain our votes, nothing and again, nothing will change not jerusalem, and unfortunately pollard has -0 chance, its only verbal, they don't say what they mean they don't mean what they say, and the rest history will judge,

Don't lump everything together. Neither Mr. Romney this year, nor Hussein in 2008, nor any sitting president or pretender ever promised to pardon Yonasan Pollard. Apparently for an obvious reason: none of them thinks that he should pardoned.

Yonasan is a yid and for that reason I want him free, if at all possible, this afternoon. But none of the leaders of this country want him freed, don't say anything to the contrary and there is no reason to accuse them of hypocrisy.

Although you have logic on your side, unfortunately that's not the reasoning used by the US administration.

The entire campus of Hebrew University is in 1948 Jerusalem, and it has never been part of Jordan and has been part of, and used by, Israel since the very first day of its independence.
Yet, in the 90s, the Clinton Administration barred a visit to Mt Scopus - as it was part of "disputed territory". Any and all attempts by the Israeli government and the University's Administration to talk sense into them, fell on deaf ears.
I remember in one press conference when the US Spokesman was asked to show on a map how it could even be geographically possible for Hebrew University's Mt.Scopus Campus to be on the other side of the green line, since that would make it an unconnected "island" of palestinian jerusalem which is wholly within israeli jerusalem, which is logistically and historically impossible.- but he could not do so...

Why obamas administration thinks it is "offensive" to suggest that Israel's capital is Jerusalem is beyond me. Who determines a nation's capital? Enemies, "friends," friends, or the nation itself?
Is Obama suggesting he would sooner kowtow to Palestinians' non recognition of Israel than to Israel - the sovereign, democratic, bastion of equality and freedom in the Middle East - which clearly views Jerusalem as its capital? היתכן?
Not shocked. But quite disappointed in current administration's view in this manner
