Albany, NY - New York’s comptroller says a new computer sleuth has stopped $90,000 in unemployment checks that were headed to New Yorkers apparently vacationing abroad this summer and to foreign scammers.

State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli tells The Associated Press his office found the checks bound for Europe, Mexico, Vietnam and other foreign bank accounts through a computer filter installed in June.

That was put in place after the state Department of Labor noticed people were filing their weekly “recertification” of eligibility for benefits from internet IP addresses in other countries.

People in New York and some other states have for years been able to certify eligibility online after initially applying in person. It replaces in-person visits requiring recipients to show identification.

The labor department says it will tighten its controls.

its like that in canada for a long time. As soon as they scan your passport upon exit, you are not eligible for benefits until you return.

When the ecnomy is bad, does that mean "no more vacationing?" these people claiming unemploement were all working & paying taxes ... unfortunately they lost there jobs, so the goverment helps them a bit... they have the freedom to do with their money what they like as long as its legal.

It is unemployment benefits. They are >required< to be actively looking for work, and to be keeping a record of that search, etc, and to certify that they are looking. (I suppose that one could look from another country over the internet.)

If they are taking unemployment, they are not working and it is not their money. they should not be vacationing if they need these checks "to feed their family" as the picture states.
And to all those reading this: vacationing is not a right. it is an 'extra" and it is a privilege granted to those who can afford it! if you cannot pay your bills and feed your family, you have no right to go on vacation anywhere- even to the bungalows! first pay your tuition. then you can go up to the mountains.

"they have the freedom to do with their money what they like as long as its legal.”

Collecting unemployment compensation while vacationing is NOT legal. In the weekly questions answered while filing, the unemployed certifies that he/she is both looking for work AND available for FULL-TIME work.
If you are on vacation, in school of even G-D forbid in the hospital, you are not available for full time work.

What is a person supposed to do if he bought airline tickets months in advance for a once-in-a-lifetime trip abroad? Or to a family event overseas?

Stop collecting unemployment until he/she returns and is ready to look for a job again. Why is it so hard for some to understand that unemployment insurance is not supposed to be a paid vacation? It is supposed to help people who are actively looking for a job.
I look forward to when those who work off the book so they can collect unemployment are dealt with. You cannot complain about taxes and believe that it is ok to cheat and cost the taxpayer more money.

So, a vacation to the Catskills or Poconos is okay?? So is a vacation to Florida, Arizona, California etc.!! That is often much more expensive than an off-season vacation in Mexico or some Caribbean Islands (air and hotel)!! Cracking down strictly against affordable vacations while "allowing" domestic vacations is simply unfair.

The technology involved here is very basic, our website routinely flags orders that are placed from a Country other than the delivery address.

"Vacations" are not allowed while collecting unemployment. Period. Full stop. If you are on unemployment you receive the money with the expectation that you are looking for work and available to accept same. If you take a vacation in the Pocanos or Catskills you should stop the checks while you are away; otherwise it is fraud. What is so hard to understand about that? They are cracking down on the foreign vacations because they are easier to track (for now) than the domestic ones.

They should expand this to welfare checks, and to people shopping for fur coats, diamond rings, and Cadillacs.
