New York, NY - Advocates are turning up the heat on City Council Speaker Christine Quinn over a bill mandating paid sick days for employees — attempting to turn her opposition into a political liability as she runs for mayor.
More than a dozen groups backing the measure will target half a million New Yorkers by e-mail Monday, asking them to push Quinn to allow a vote on it. They’re also planning to hit 100,000 “prime” Democratic voters with door-knocks and literature highlighting her position. The Working Families Party is pushing the effort along with liberal groups like MoveOn.org.

I don't understand why its a requirement. Wen ordering a bagel and chease it should be reuired that they add a vegetable to it like a free tomatoe. I'm not against treating the employee fairly and treating them well because they will work harder with benefits. I dnt think big brother should mandate it, and ad another burden on the employer.

Another reason not to have a business in New York and give workers jobs. The nanny state is too much and it shows in job numbers

A company should simply establish a fixed bucket of days off for ANY reason, holidays, sickness, birthdays, regligious days, maternity leave, etc. The employee can call it whatever they want and can substitute different types of days off within the overall cap. Any time off after exceeding the cap, is upaid although they should be allowed to pay the charge to stay on the firm's health insurance program.

I don't understand this.
Thirty years ago, I worked for the federal government and every two-week pay period I accumulated half a day's sick leave. Be'ezras haShem, I had no need of those days which, over a period of slightly more than eight years' employment accumulated to 100 days.
So what's new here?

This is not some bleeding-heart liberal scheme- it's the answer to a public health problem. People in low-paying jobs frequently do not have enough money to take a day off so they go to work sick. Do you want your sandwich made by someone with a stomach problem? They may not be able to take time off for a child's illness so the child goes to school and gets the other children sick. In the end it's common sense and humane to give people the time off.

Dear #9:
What's to stop people from just showing up when they are contagious, and just take the "sick day" when it is sunny outside?

It should be okay to call in sick if you really are sick but why should the employer have to pay the worker for not working and on top of that have to find somebody else to do the job and pay them. It is unfair for a small business man to have to give a 'paid' sick day. If the employer wants to do it then fine. But it should not be the law.
