Zurich Children’s Hospital said that it would deal with circumcisions on a case-by-case basis.

The Swiss decision to end the ritual stirred up controversy, with Jewish and Muslim group arguing that the move infringed on their religious freedoms. In July, the Simon Wiesenthal Center issued a sharp critique of the ban.

“Without strong, unequivocal leadership from the top, these initiatives will further embolden anti-Semitism in the mainstream of European society,” warned Rabbi Abraham Cooper, associate dean of the Wiesenthal Center, in a letter to the Swiss ambassador to the US.
