One worker suffered a broken leg and the other was injured moderately. Immediately after the collapse firefighters searched the building but did not find anyone trapped inside.

As is typical with incidents in haredi neighborhoods, thousands of curious onlookers gathered around the site of the accident, forcing police to call in larger forces for crowd control.

Police detained the foreman of the project for questioning. Traffic was closed on Malchei Yisrael Street, the site of the collapse. Jerusalem mayor Nir Barkat arrived on the scene to inspect the damages.

According to eyewitnesses, the building began to sway slowly before it collapsed, allowing most of the people to clear away from the site before the top part of the building came crashing down.

A lot of people will undoubtedly say that Hashem is sending us a message. I agree. And the message is this: Observe housing codes.

Why does it say: As is typical with incidents in haredi neighborhoods, thousands of curious onlookers gathered around the site of the accident, forcing police to call in larger forces for crowd control.
This is the Jerusalem Post’s anti-Haredi bias coming through. Do they really think that if this had happened in a secular neighbor no one would have come out to look at what was going on???

There are obviously some things that ignorant commenters here wouldn’t know. One of them being, that there are very strict laws in preserving old building designs in yerushalayim. Most buildings that are reconstructed need to preserve the outter appearance of the building so the way they do it is basically scratch and demolish the whole inside which leaves the building with very weak bare externals. This is not the first time this has happened. there’s a huge huge building on rashi and tachkemoni that fell apart on a friday night a year ago for the same reason.

Gawping with a mouth hung half open is an old traditional Bochur habit. They will gawp at any workmen doing anything from clearing out the drains to building extensions to watching the bin men to people cutting their hedges……..
