Maryland – Baltimore’s Orthodox Jewish community may be getting a new member – convicted sex offender Rabbi Stanley Levitt. Levitt, 66, pled guilty last month to molesting three Boston-area boys in the 1970s.

The Baltimore Jewish Times (http://bit.ly/RHh0JY) writes that Levitt, who was sentenced to 10 years probation, was directed to wear a GPS monitoring device and was told to abide by the sex offender registry laws wherever he resides.
Because Levitt has connections in Baltimore, Rabbi Shmuel Silber of the Suburban Orthodox Congregation Toras Chaim has been warning congregants that Levitt may decide to come back to Baltimore. In an email to his members, Rabbi Silber wrote, “We have an obligation to be vigilant and ensure that the shul remains a safe place for our children. . . If you see Mr. Levitt enter our shul, please notify me or one of the shul officers immediately.”
Rabbi Yaakov Hopfer of Shearith Israel has followed suit. He posted a letter along with Levitt’s photo in his shul with the following warning, “Stanley (Zusia) Levitt…has faced multiple accusations that he molested young children in both Philadelphia and Boston. He recently pled guilty to these charges. This, of course, warrants our being cautious about him.”
Abuse experts have said that Levitt is a classic pedophile who has never shown remorse or taken responsibility for his behavior, and is, therefore, unlikely to change his ways.

– assuming that he really did these crimes, they occurred (at least the ones referenced in the story) 35 to 40 years ago. If he hasn’t done anything similar in three and a half decades (and again, this is based on the info in the story), then that kind of suggests that just maybe he has changed his ways. Meaning the unnamed “abuse experts” are about as accurate and substantiated as, well, smoke and mirrors.
It seems to me very wrong to post his picture. It is kinda a dinei nefoshos quagmire. If he is a rodef, you would need to put up his picture, if he isn’t you probably lost your portion in the world to come. My guess is that halachically he is “NOT” a rodef.
Why not post his picture? Let us ALL be aware to beware of him..show his picture to everyone, including children, so that they know not to be fooled by his looks and to avoid him at all costs!!!
There has to be a double standard. Why arent the Baltimore Rabbis posting pictures and letters of all OrthodoxJewish sex offenders in the Baltimore community? Why only RabbiLevitt? There are a handful of Jewish offenders in Baltimore,that nobody knows or talks about. it must be politics as usual.

Yasher koach to the Rabbis and Jewish community of Baltimore for their public warning against a molester even though he looks “frum.” YASHER KOACH for worrying more about protecting children than protecting the “frum” image. If only those communities in Brooklyn and Lakewood who protect “holy” looking molesters with yarmulkes, tzitzis and payos would take advantage of the Elul zman to do teshuva on this REAL issue! If only they would have the courage to follow the example of these Baltimore rabbanim. Then our Torah communities could have the satisfaction of knowing that we accomplished something REALLY significant during these Yomim Noraim. May the old year and its curses of protecting molesters end. May a new year of protecting our children begin.
I am appalled at some of the stupidity exposed by some of the above comments. Those who are innocent do NOT plead guilty to spare themselves of a trial. Anyone that does so is too stupid to deserve the dignity they just discarded. I don’t care if this guy committed his crimes 50 years ago. His rodef status has never left him. The better question to ask is why is he permitted to live among other humans. The experts are perfectly on target when they do not trust that a pedophile has “reformed”. There is no extent of therapy that can cure one to become risk free. As for the “chassidishe” pedophiles, we have all seen their faces in the media. Lastly, anyone who knows a victim knows that the acts committed were clear murder. Why a perpetrator gets to live altogether is strange. Bringing back the death penalty and applying it would make the world a better place. Until then, life sentences without parole would be all that satisfies me.

I don’t understand why these people are allowed to live in ANY community. There are farms that need mashgichim. They could go and live in rural America, away from the things that tempt them. There is no logical reason why an entire community must put the neshamos of their children at risk so that this man doesn’t feel shunned.
In this instance Baltimore is light years ahead of Brooklyn. Last week a judge ruled against a registered sex offender who brought his rabbi to Court to ‘VOUCH’ for him so he could end his probation early. The wise female Judge ruled against them, and properly made mince meat of the sex offender and his rabbi.
