“We know of more than twelve reported silver thefts that took place over the summer, including one of our own members,” Yanky Daskal of Shomrim told VIN News.

According to Daskal, Shomrim was able to identify the Ocean Parkway resident thanks to the clear video surveillance footage that they obtained from several of the homes that had been targeted.

“We showed his picture around and followed a few leads until we were able to identify the robber,” said Daskal. A discarded glove, which appeared to be the same type of glove worn by the burglar during the robberies, was found outside the suspect’s building. Shomrim members spent twenty seven hours on surveillance outside the suspect’s residence hoping to catch him in the act before deciding to turn the matter over to the police.

“Detectives told us that within five minutes he confessed to a few of the robberies,” reported Daskal.

Several of the items stolen had been sold to a silver store in Brooklyn, while others had been sold to a silver store in Manhattan. Police recovered an esrog box, a megilla case, and a menorah, valued at $10,000, stolen from the E5th Street home of Rabbi Yechezkel Zion last week from a Borough Park silver store this morning.

“He generally broke in to homes during the day or in the evenings, dressed in a white shirt, yarmulke and tzitzis in order to blend in better,” said Daskal. “He didn’t just take the larger, more valuable items. He would take every piece of silver he could find.”

The suspect, whose name has not been released and is currently in police custody is a member of Brooklyn’s Bucharian community. It is still unclear whether the suspect worked alone or with an accomplice.

Daskal credited the homeowner installed video surveillance systems for bringing a relatively quick resolution to the crime spree.

“It just goes to show how important and how valuable a surveillance system can be,” said Daskal.

Och and vey when the silver stores are buying these stolen items! While there will always be ganovim, the fact that there is a market in the silver stores for this stolen property is a big fuel to the fire. Know where you shop – shop by reputable stores!

What a big menorah!! I think silver stores should be responsible for not reporting to police or shomrim.

Please print the name of this Ganev. It’s an outrage this thief can abuse Judaism and put on a disguise of an erliche Yid: white shirt, yarmulke and tzitzit.

It appears to me that the thief was jewish — correct me if I’m wrong — which means that the shop owner probably assumed that he’s selling off his own silver due to economic need.

Legitimate buyers REQUIRE A DRIVER’S LICENSE or other valid ID when you sell to them. Those who bought this stuff can BE PROSECUTED.

if the thief looked like he might have owned this silver, and was now having a hard time financially, and needed to sell his silver, why would the silver store be blamed for helping someone down on his luck? its a win/win situation for the silver store getting a good deal and the person selling his silver due to his being in need of cash. dont be so quick to judge!

How are the silver stores supposed to know that it was stolen??? He can come into the store and say my dad just passed away and left me these and i would like to cash them in because i need money!

I have a family who is a shomrim member. Because of a family simcha b”h we got to spend a lot of time together in the last week. Aside from twenty seven hours on surveillance outside the suspect’s residence Shomrim members spent the last week, literaly hundreds of hours, interviewing, surveiling, following suspects, canvasing Boro Park and Flatbush. With Hashems help their hard work paid off. The community owes them a big thank you.

The biggest mistake this crook made was MESSING with Moty Perl..Moty’s house was broken in a few weeks ago and all his silver were stolen…Remember when Sholzon messed with Shomrim and only Shomrim put an end to his filthy newspaper.
Do NOT mess with the people who protect us 24-7 and they work beminah letzorchei tzibir….Also lets not condem anyone for buying those stolen properties before we get the facts together….

Nys law requires all resellers of used goods, to store a copy of photo ID for all customers selling goods on every transaction.

Had these stores followed the law, it would made it easier to track down the suspect.
