The fire broke out at around 2:30 Monday morning at the 4 story 200×100 building at 1365 Carroll Street and Kingston Avenue, which also houses a dormitory for students.

Due to working smoke detectors the students were alerted to the fire and got most of the residents out of the building safe, but some had to be rescued and treated by Hatzolah at the scene, as firefighters continued to battle the blaze.

The flames started on the second floor, where some construction had been taking place and spread very quick. But It’s not known if that played a role in the fire.

The fire was declared under control shortly before 5:00 a.m.

Some firefighters were taken to the hospital, one with serious burns.

WABC NY is reporting that officials say the fire is suspicious because of how quickly it spread.
