Jerusalem - The former Israeli soldier freed almost a year ago in a lopsided deal with Gaza militants says people should always have hope despite their troubles.

The remarks by Gilad Schalit published Sunday on the eve of the Jewish new year in newspaper Yediot are his most detailed to date.

It is best to deal with tough situations as “calmly as possible,” Schalit wrote, adding that one should “always, always remember that there is a chance for rescue from every trouble.”

Palestinian militants abducted Schalit in a cross-border raid from Gaza in 2006. He was released in exchange for over 1,000 Palestinian prisoners, many involved in deadly attacks on civilians.

He has become a reluctant celebrity but rarely speaks about his ordeal.

Schalit wrote that he wants to study and travel.

While so many people including myself are delighted & thrilled that he made it out of "hell on earth", My mind can't comprehend to the slightest how gilad, even though non religious, never mentioned anything that after all said & done it was with GOD'S help that ultimately saved him! You wanna tell me that while being locked up for years by HAMAS, he never took a second to pray for god to save him?? Why cant he just admit it! ?

srulyk, you do things your way and let Gilad Schalit do things the way he wants to do them. After all, you are not your brother's keeper.

Oh, and by the way: really and truly, it's none of anyone else's business how Mr Schalit conducts his life - not even well-meaning charedi Jews. When Schalit's time comes (after 120 years) he will settles his own accounts.

I agree 100% with #3. Regarding #2, there are many levels of observance from the most ultra-reformed, to the ultra-orthodox. However, it is not up to us to judge someone, based upon their religious observance. The final judgment comes from Hashem. Thus, on Erev Rosh Hashanah, #2 should not unleash a diatribe regarding Gilad's alleged lack of religious observance. For one thing, since Gilad has kept a low profile for the last year, it is quite possible that he benched Hagomel, in a secretive manner. However, he does not have to advertise what religious observances he observes or does not observe. The latter is between him and Hashem.
