According to the Center, this is believed to be one of the last World War II-era boxcars in existence and the only one to be exported to the United States. This boxcar came from Cottbus, Germany. The Nazis used boxcars to transport millions of Holocaust victims to concentration camps during WWII. The Holocaust Memorial Center has exhibits that focus on European Jewish history and the Institute of the Righteous. This boxcar is believed to be one of the last in existence and the only one exported to the United States from Germany. The Holocaust Memorial Center acquired the boxcar last September.

Local philanthropists Henrietta and Alvin Weisberg’s generous donation are funding the construction of the permanent exhibit, which is tentatively scheduled to open in mid- to late-November.

The gift also will be used toward a permanent educational endowment.

The DeRoy Testamentary Foundation and the Oliver Dewey Marcks Foundation are providing additional support for the exhibit.
