Based on license plate numbers ending in odd or even numbers, drivers will be allowed to buy gasoline on alternating days, Bloomberg announced at a briefing. Licenses ending in a letter are eligible to buy gas on odd-numbered days, he said.

The system, which follows a similar rationing regime implemented in New Jersey last week because of Sandy, begins at 6 a.m. on Friday, he said.

New York City has been hard hit by fuel shortages since Sandy hit ten days ago, due to power outages and inventory that has been stranded at refineries.

Bloomberg said only a quarter of the city’s gas stations are open.

Emergency vehicles, buses, taxis and certain other vehicles are exempt from the rationing system, he said.

The Mayor said that the NYPD will be at Gas stations to enforce the rule.

What happened Bloomberg needs gas for the weekend? Lets wait another week!!!
Its perfect the NYPD has something to do keep busy with managing the gas deliveries, This place is unbelievable people are sleeping in their cars waiting for gas, or getting out of bed midnight to score some gas, While the NYPD is keeping stations that have gas closed till nearby stations run out of gas, Good Morning MR Bloomberg, Why the need now?

We are the worst nation ever! Look at this big country of America, they are lost, if not for the private charity organiztions and similar churches and synogugues, people would have rioted in the strees and died from hunger.

I was just in Bayswater today, if not for the Kiryas Yoel Emergency management control center, God only knows what would have happened. 1/2 of Queens looks like a gohst town

This guy, will do anything that can further annoy the people in this city. Why is there a gas shortage here, at the same time a few miles in NJ has more then enough.

Can anyone please explain what is going on with this gas shortage?in new jersey there is gas as if nothing had happened could it be that billionaire Bloomberg mr go green gets a kick out of torturing new yorkers?why this non sense with odd even plates just let it be as it suppose to be in America without waiting in lines as it used to be before.
If we not gonna start a public campaign day in and day out against bachelor billionaire Bloomberg things gonna get worse with everything.

wow this is really ridiculous. they said there wasnt a shortage and now there is. if every station would get gas this would be over. now theres a restriction from buying at the one place that has

the problem is even worse than a few days ago. almost no stations have gas at all. all rationing will do is cut the lines from 5 hours to 3 hours but still almost no one will be able to get gas because there’s almost none to get. Why is no one screaming about this? We had thousands of people protesting nothing with occupy wall street and tons of media attention and now tens of thousands of us who are unbelievably inconvenienced and some losing large amounts of money and all we do is stand in line like lemalach. Let the gov’t bring in tankers from other states and have tanker after tanker lined up delivering gas to stations in the city all day and night.

In New Jersey it made more sense to implement the rule, because over there it is full service only. But in New York, it is self service, so who would enforce the rule? But now they decided to have the NYPD be the referee.

Won’t work if there’s no gas and everyone is closed. Additionally, people will run to the gas station on their eligible day even if they still have some gas knowing they won’t be able to fill up the following day. The only way to solve this problem is by increasing supply. Why can’t they bring in from neighboring states?

In the Dominican Republic they have heave heavy hurricanes almost every 2 months, but within 2-3 days it looks like there was no hurricane. We are supposed to be this big strong country and we have no clue what to do.

Its scary, hillarious and humiliating all at once!

I can’t understand WHY there is a severe shortage? Why can’t they truck in gas from Connecticut or Pennsylvania, etc.???

If people can and are driving into NJ and other states I’m sure that THEY could do the same and bring in gas from there!

IF THEY WANTED TO. The Problem is THEY don’t want to! I would like to know WHY???

    Tziony

The rationing will not eliminate the problem but it should help make lines a little more managable until the shortage is resolved. Of course anyone and everyone in office has to do everything in their power to increase the supply of gas by any and all means but until the shortage is eliminated the rationing will at least help making waiting ot get gas moer tolerable. By the way, Bloomberg says “that only a quarter of gas stations in the city are open”. He makes it sound like their not open because they have no power or were damaged. That’s baloney!! Most gas stations in the metro area, outside of the hardest hit areas, can open. They have power and the pumps are working, they just don’t have gas. So when Bloomberg says 25% of the stations are open that’s very misleading. It’s as if he’s saying that the problem is not due to a shortage of gas but that there aren’t enough operational gas stations.

As long as NYPD keeps getting overtime $$$ the union is happy therefore Bloomberg is happy.
NJ is working because they let the feds do their job.
This is the price of living in a corrupt city.

There is gas in NJ, its only in NY that there is this issue. Bloomberg has an agenda to get people to stop using cars and use the MTA.

Where is the treo, Felder, Hikind and Greinfield?

There is nothing like a disaster that brings out the true incompetence and malfeasance of politicians. In my opinion, the only one who has earned my respect in handling this crisis, is Gov. Chris Christie of New Jersey. Bloomberg and Cuomo are the worst not to mention all the other dreck that passes for politicians here in NY.

There’s NO GAS anywhere in south Brooklyn anyway, so how is this going to help??!! We have to bombard Governor Cuomos’s phone at 518-474-8390 and Bloomberg’s office (can’t find a phone # – guess call 311). Maybe if we annoy them enough, they will start bringing some tankers in here.

How is this going to help?!
So only half the cars can line up one day & the other half the next??? Its not like everyone in NY is on line at the moment anyway.

“Emergency vehicles, buses, taxis and certain other vehicles are exempt from the rationing system, he said.”
    – Half the cars taking the gas are the so called “emergency responders” – anyone with a PBS card.
-Where do all the buses get gas from? How come they don’t have a problem getting around and they are not being rationed?

    people dont worry

now they have us all begging for gas .. so they see there is no problem raising the price to 6.00 or 8.00 and the people will say well at least we have gas

we will be like europe and canada pretty soon

and our beloved president (and bloomberg)will get what they want … we shouldnt use gas global warming..

yes we will be a third worlds country soon or we will be the puppet of the UN because they will tax us .. yes they want the UN to make a carbon tax so they can take our money and give it to the other countries because we use too much carbon and countries like uganda dont use carbon so we will buy the rights from them ….

    gd help us all

Can anyone explain why does NJ and CT have al the gas now, and we are so close and no gas, I honestly think its a conspiracy because the Brooklyn battery tunnel and queens midtown tunnels are still closed, so imagine if everyone can get easily gas how big the traffic would be,
so the city is actually holding back the gas

Actually, it’s the fault of Napolitano. Homeland security should have no problem trucking in billions of gallons to NY. We can send a fully equipped army of 200,000 to Iraq, but not gas to NY?
