New York – Battery Tunnel To Partly Reopen To Motorists

    One lane of the Hugh L. Carey Tunnel, formerly known as the Brooklyn Battery Tunnel will be open to passenger vehilces daily from 6am-10am (Manhattan bound) and 3pm-7pm (Brooklyn bound), according to NotifyNYC.

    The second lane will remain reserved for buses during those hours. While the East Tube is open, The west tube of the tunnel, which carries 50,000 vehicles a day, remains closed for repairs.

    MTA Chairman Joseph Lhota said the tunnel was flooded with an estimated 43 million gallons of seawater, which caused extensive damage. More than 1 mile of its 9,000 feet were flooded, officials said.

    Trucks are still not being allowed into the eastern tube.

    The picture included with the story is of the Battery Park Underpass…. not the Brooklyn Battery (Hugh Carey) tunnel.
