Tel Aviv - Maj. Itamar Abu is keeping the millions of residents of the greater Tel Aviv metropolitan area safe from death and destruction.

As commander of the hastily assembled Iron Dome battery wheeled out on Friday to defend Israel’s largest metropolis, Abu is playing a critical role in ensuring that the powerful Iranian-made Fajr-5 rockets fired from Gaza do not cause carnage on the city streets.

“It’s an amazing feeling when we make an interception,” Abu said on Monday.

“We set up this battery in only 24 hours. All of the people involved in this – when we see a missile strike, the incoming threat – feel an enormous sense of satisfaction.”

Three days ago, Abu was pursuing his university studies, when he was called back by the air force to command the new battery, the fifth of its kind deployed to defend the lives of civilians from Palestinian terrorists’ rockets.

Previously the commander of the Iron Dome battery that was stationed in Beersheba, Abu wasted no time in working with technicians from the Rafael Advanced Defense Systems, which produces the systems, to get the battery up and running before terrorists could direct the rocket menace at Tel Aviv.

“We reservists are operating this,” he said.

“We had to install the interceptor missiles and make sure all the new equipment was working,” he added.

Hours after the battery went online, the first long-range projectiles hurtled at Tel Aviv, only to collide with an Iron Dome interceptor missile.

“We worked all night on Friday to have it ready,” he recalled.

The system has since successfully intercepted a number of Iranian-made Fajr-5 missiles and Gaza-manufactured long-range rockets, all of which have a range of approximately 70 kilometers.

Two interceptors are fired at every incoming threat, though if one missile carries out the task successfully, the second is sent to an open area, what Abu describes as “the interceptor’s graveyard,” to self-destruct.

“Sometimes, it takes two to fully eliminate the projectile,” he added.

Rafael has stepped up the production of interceptors, to ensure that stocks remain replenished throughout the conflict with Hamas.

“Production is more intensive now, in light of the situation,” he said.

Prior to becoming operational, the battery’s operators had to ensure that they were coordinated with civilian air traffic controllers to avoid disruption to passenger jets.

“Flights at Ben-Gurion [Airport] haven’t stopped because there is no danger whatsoever.

We’re fully synchronized with air traffic control,” he said.

“We can deal with many rockets fired at the same time,” Abu added. “A rocket falling in this built-up urban area would be disastrous. We’re driven by the goal of keeping the people of central Israel safe.”

5th Iron Dome battery and the missiles that are being produced by Rafael around the clock were made possible by emergency funding by Obama administration of $200+ million dollars. Without this funding that came a week ago, there would be deficiencies in Iron Dome effectiveness right now.

Kol hakovd to the guy that gets the missiles the Ebeshter might miss. The two of them keep us safe. Why can't you guys simply accept that the brave men and women of the IDF and IAF keep us safe. Sure, davening helps but ultimately, it takes soldiers to fight in the trenches (and in the new age of iron dome, in the missile control centers).

It's good you remain anonymous- your words belong amongst those anti-Jewish factions. Jews are proud of their achievers, whether they be in the front, the computer grid or the Bes Medrosh. Every contribution is valuable and Hashem who directs what's going on has nachas in hearing Torah learning. Period. Contact your sources for verification. We should be proud of our learners no less than lehavdil catholics are proud of their church leaders.

You write, "out father which keeps us always safe." Always? What about all the Yiddin who died during the bloody destruction of both batei mikdash, and the crusades, and the blood libel massacres, and the Cossack horrors, and the Inquisition, and the pogroms, and of course the Holocaust. Countless Jewish children tortured, burned alive, shot, gassed. Millions of Jewish women raped, mutilated while still alive, and then slaughtered like chickens. I believe in Avinu Shebashamayim -- but for whatever His reasons, He hasn't kept us safe for most of our history. In Europe we had no army; now we have the IDF. And so back then millions died; now we rule our homeland and have captured Yerushalayim and have brought in Jews from all over the world and performed amazing feats like Entebbe. No army, none of that would have happened. Yes, Hashem may have willed it that the army oes all these things -- but without people serving in the army, nothing would happen. Israel wasn't established and Jerusalem wasn't liberated because charedim sat in bais medrash learning.

Everybody helps. This fellow is doing his job with complete dedication and concentration using every fiber of his being. And the engineers and scientists who developed it did the same. It is mussar haskel, and hopefully many are learning in yeshivos and kollelim with same level of dedication. As long as each person is sincere, the RBSH will help us. It is when people goof off and let the klal down that we have problems.

kudos to Maj. Itamar . There is no reason why charedim can't do this type of work. they can sit in a room. Don't have to go out to the battlefield. Don't have to get stuck with the many shailos in the army. Many in America even with a weak education are very quick to pick up the tech skills needed for this type of job. The chasidim in B&H know their stuff. No reason we can't have more in the army

Perhaps the Chafetz Chaim would have a different opinion if he knew we were talking about Jewish soldiers, many frum, defending EY versus a bochur taking the easy route in a yeshiva. The Chafetz Chaim died in the early 1930's. Assuming your reference to him is accurate, he might have been talking about soldiers drafted into the Tzar's army.

The Ebishter doesn't "miss". He allows some soldiers to be mishtatef in helping save Jewish lives- this is also a chessed. In some cases, Hashem WANTS certain missiles to get through, although He has not told me why.

Do you actually believe for one second that without the Siyata Dishmaya from Hashem, these soldiers would be successful. I'm just a plain guy, but in my lifetime I've seen inexplicable things happen to me that could only be Yad Hashem.
Of course, it is hard to fathom why Hashem punishes us from time to time and hurts klal yisroel. Think for a minute. Maybe it's because of the type of kfira that you're espousing. The Ribbono Shel Olam loves klal yisroel. If they loved him back in the same manner and with the same intensity, life would be better.

Please tell me why 1 million Jewish children were gassed, shot or died from hunger by the Nazis. You must have a direct line, will report on your communication

To my fellow Yiden, I am appalled and shocked about the Apikorsus being discussed on this "jewish site"...
Obviosly our dear good father in heaven has his plans which we dont understand and we do not want to understand his master plan.. (we'll all understand once we join our Avos in shamayim after 120 years). All the yidden who were tortured and killed in the last 2,000 years in golus was for our good and Hashem's will...
To say that Hashem cannot keep us safe, instead only the IDF soldier's can keep us safe (who for most part have abandoned Hashem's holy torah and mitzvot).. is downright appalling and sad. I cannot how some of us jews can lack in such Amuna and Bitachun.. these are the first things we need to know and practice in judiasm.. I suggest you take a look in the holy sefer v'yoel moshe (yes, that's what Satmar rebbe wrote) it will open your eyes in these difficult times of great nisyonas... Hatzlucha to all yidden and may we merit moshiach speedily in our days.. and we shall all greet moshiach with full amuna and bitachon...

We rule our own destination with Hashem's gentle eye watching. The IDF soldiers serve Hashem as well as anyone who davens 24/7! Who is above Hashem to judge? IF the IDF soldiers studied as much as some of you, WHO would be the pious souls to help Hashem help you?

For all those people who have a problem with faith in Divine direction and Torah learning, they are not obviously interested in absorbing Jewish traditions. The world is open for you to go wherever you wish and do whatever you want. Don't blame the Jews who are loyal to their traditions for staying steadfast.

"Loyal to THEIR traditions"? This seems to be one of the reasons that WE as a group (JEWS) argue amongst ourselves rather than gain strength! For those who have spent their first 20-30 years absorbing Jewish tradition, learning Torah, attending Yeshiva etc, we are extremely lucky! We also need to feed our children, take responsibility for ourselves, teach others, LIVE and do the mitzvot that Hashem intends for us to do! One of those mitzvot is protecting Israel!
