Paris -  France said on Tuesday it would vote in favour of Palestinian non-member status at the United Nations, boosting Palestinian efforts to secure greater international recognition.

Frustrated that their bid for full U.N. membership last year was thwarted by U.S. opposition in the U.N. Security Council, Palestinians have launched a watered-down bid for recognition as a non-member state, similar to the status the Vatican enjoys.

The proposal, which is due to be put to the vote in the General Assembly at the end of the week, would implicitly recognize Palestinian statehood. It could also grant access to bodies such as the International Criminal Court in The Hague, where the Palestinians could file complaints against Israel.

“This Thursday or Friday, when the question is asked, France will vote yes,” Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius announced in the French National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

Abbas’ bid seems certain to win approval in any vote in the 193-nation assembly. The United States say Palestinian statehood must be achieved by negotiation and has called on Abbas to return to peace talks that collapsed in 2010 over Israeli settlement construction in the occupied West Bank.

“It is only with negotiations between the two sides that we demand immediately without any preconditions that a Palestinian state can become a reality,” Fabius said.

France, a member of the U.N. Security Council, had under former President Nicolas Sarkozy promised to support Abbas if he opted for the upgrade option and broke from its closest allies last year voting in favour of giving the Palestinians full membership of the U.N.‘s cultural agency UNESCO.

You either stand with us or you stand with terrorists. The overwhelming objection to some kind of Palestinian state has nothing to do with being "anti-Palestinian". It is ALL about creating a TERRORIST state. While MANY people in the Palestinian territories are innocent victims of a brutal, terrorist regime, it is still a TERRORIST regime. While many Palestinians are victims of propaganda and a media that is 100% controlled by the TERRORISTS, the leadership are still TERRORISTS.

Nobody with any sense of decency wants to see innocent people (especially children) suffer. Nobody with any sense of decency wants to see people's lives destroyed by a brutal terrorist regime.

But, TERRORISTS must NEVER be legitimized. TERRORISTS must never be given even 1-inch of breathing room.

As far as I'm concerned, if France is willing to hand such a victory to these TERRORISTS (like Chamberlain did with Hitler) then we must be willing to cut France off immediately. There is no excuse for maintaining any relationship with a state-sponsor of TERRORISM.

Well said, PMO! It goes beyond that; France is doing it primarily for the sakeof their own arrogant agenda, which is to undermine the USA. France has long been nothing but affective in the world of impacting anything, since WW1. However, they still think themselves as a superpower, hence thier response to again demonstrate thier so called world influence! That is why they voted last time for the full membership. They should rather look in their own backyard, how they treat their own Muslim population.

France would back a poodle up their back side if they thought it was fashionable.

France is overrun with muslims and will find themselves a minority in their own land, in about 25 years or so, due the lopsided overwhelming population explosion on the muslim side and the lack thereof amongst the french non-muslims.
I certainly don't pity them!
