Brooklyn, NY - Four Chasidic men are the latest to feel the wrath of Brooklyn District Attorney Charles Hynes who vowed to crack down on anyone who attempts to interfere in any cases of sexual abuse within the Jewish community.
The four men, who were seated in the courtroom today during the Nechemya Weberman sexual abuse trial, were observed by court officers illegally taking pictures of the plaintiff and defendant, according to reports on DNAinfo.com.
After being notified by the court officers, Judge John Ingram excused jurors from the courtroom and asked everyone in the room to turn in all electronic devices, including cellphones.
The four men were arrested after pictures of the victim were found on their phones.
VIN News has confirmed with the DA that the four men will be charged with criminal contempt in the second degree and face up to twelve months in jail if convicted.
It is unknown if any of the pictures had already been uploaded to the internet although one picture of the plaintiff taken today has reportedly surfaced on Twitter.
The woman, who is now married, has testified for several days about being sexually abused by Weberman, whom she was sent to for counseling for resisting some of her community’s traditional ways.
She had testified that Weberman, an unlicensed counselor in the community, locked her in a room and abused her, even while others were working in offices nearby.
Weberman’s lawyers maintain she hatched the tale to get revenge against him and others for their restrictive garb and practices that she felt were overly stifling.
The Brooklyn DA’s office, which has come under scrutiny in the past regarding its handling of sexual abuse within the Jewish community, told VIN News that anyone who directly or indirectly attempts to harass, threaten or intimidate anyone in this case in any way will be vigorously prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

Because they posted it on twitter! with the word "machsheifa" describing her! How dare they take photos of a victim of abuse on the stand when cameras and picture taking are banned from the room! Everyone was live witnness to the intimidation that victims of abuse go through!

Perhaps they lead such sheltered lives that they didn't know that photos can not be taken in a courtroom. For 4 of them to take pictures indicates to me that this was planned, pehaps to embarass or intimidate the young woman. Their actions certainly don't help Weberman, who may be totally innocent.

Clearly "seicheldig" is substantially lacking in "sechel". Yes they are a bunch of fools, but their behavior is a clear violation of published court rules that are announced at the start of every court session. There is a presumption that anyone deliberately violating the rules is doing so with the intent of intimidiating the plaintiff and witnesses. They will have up to 12 months to contemplate their behavior.

It is not legal to publicize the identity of someone who has claimed to be sexually abused. The reason for this law is so that others who were abused will not hesitate to report the crime for fear of public ridicule. It seems that these people were intending to publicize her picture, and discourage others in the community from acting as she did.

It is not in any of our position to decide who's the bad 1 here. No one besides 2 ppl know exactly what happened. Not me and not you. So don't say she's doing revenge if you don't know. And besides just from the few trial cases, it just proves that she did not fabricate this story, since his lawyer couldn't even get her to lie once and that's really impossible to fabricate a story and have everything down path. Let the unbiased jurors decide who's the liar.

They broke the law. It is illegal to take a picture in a courtroom and there are signs to this effect when you enter a courthouse. There is a stricter penalty when it comes to sexual abuse. There is a reason these laws are in place, and if chas v'shalom someone in your family was a victim as is the case in mine, trust me, you would want them locked up.

Every court I've been in -- state and Federal -- has signs clearly banning taking photgraphs. The last one I was in made non-attorneys check their cameras, cell phones and other electronic devices in a locker or with the guard. Bad guys (gang members, organized crime families, and others, have been known to photograph witnesses and jurors and show them to others hired or motivated to threaten, kidnap, or harm them before, during and after the trial. Ever wonder why so many crooks get off?

I do not know the people. I have no idea what their IQ is. Any twelve year old can read and realize that there are no pictures allowed in court. Any twelve year old knows that you cannot take a photo of a person who is a rape victim (or for some of my friends here an alleged rape victim). It is not fun to intimidate witnesses. It is not boys being boys to intimidate witnesses. As to number 20: I am thrilled that atleast one of the young men is rich. It will save your community from having to have a fund raiser to defend him.

Countless? Really? Is it society that is becoming more suspicious or is it Geula? Is Geula becoming more suspicious, or only when frum man is charged?
I, obviously, do not know if this defendant is guilty. I have my suspicions, but that is all I have. What I know is that more and more people take these suspicions seriously because of the "countless" abusers who have been protected by the community. Children are suffering, but to some it is the abuser who must be protected.
I am glad that VIN has decided, finally, to follow the trial. Perhaps by doing so both Geula and I will learn who needs our sympathy.

You say he is a "hero" She says he is a "molester".
Who is right? Perhaps neither of us will ever know 100%.
However, in order to best try to figure out what happened, try to put together all the facts, create a narrative, and see if it makes sense, in his favor.
Fact # 1: she was 12
Fact # 2: he counseled her, for hours at a time
Fact # 3: In a bedroom
Fact # 4: He was a "hero who fights against child molesters" (your words)
Does that add up? Does that make sense to you, that a hero who fights against child molesters would counsel a girl in a bedroom, for hours?
Just so you know, YOU are the one who took away his last defense, in my mind.
Until now, I wondered. What kind of man locks counsels a girl in a bedroom?
The only answer I can think, he is either clueless to the concept of child molestation, or he is guilty. Nothing else makes sense.
However, you, - by saying he is a "hero who fights against child molesters", you make it clear he is not clueless. Therefore, ask yourself. What kind of person counsels a girl for four hours in a bedroom?

The few times I've been in court I heard instructions stating that picture taking is not allowed. These 4 men were in court, they must have heard the same instructions but they chose to ignore it.

Their intent was clear since their phones were inspected and those arrested with the pics had in fact already emailed or twittered the pics according to the reports. Please do not try to make this better. The rules in the court room are very clear PUT AWAY YOUR PHONES. NO TALKING, NO TEXTING, NO PICS. The court officer gives instructions before entering the room. If you can't abide by the rules there are 30 people outside waiting for an opportunity to get in.
A Jew has two obligation, follow the Torah and follow the law. In the Torah we are taught to respect others. What is so difficult about following rules on someone else's turf? Have you seen the sign in Wiili asking that women who are not dressed appropriately do not enter their stores? How about Meah Shearim? Jews have a right to expect others to follow our rules but WE don't have to extend the same courtesy?

I am so so very glad you brought that up. I was in court all day Monday. The defense was so careful in his very long and winded opening remarks to NOT say that he is an ordained RABBI. Please tell me where he learned and from whom he received semicha. I want to see his papers. He is a fool and he was trained by the worst of the worst. He took a page out of Monstrowitz book and is trying his case like Weingarten did. He will follow both to guilty verdict. As much as I have total support for the victim, my heart also goes out to his wife. I can't even imagine how much pain she carries within being married to such a menuval. He shows no respect for her at all, expecting her to sit in court and listen to all this. He does not even look at her with any sort of sympathy or compassion. It is his show and he is enjoying every minute of it. If he truly was a mensch he would have worked on any plea deal he could just to save her the humiliation of this trial. The victim B"H has her husband and tons of supporters. But who can she lean on and who will show her compassion when her husband is finally in the cage he deserves?

Actually anyone can be a "therapist" but he is still NOT licensed. Clergy, does not mean licensed. The fact that you do not get that already discredits every other comment you made that was made from ignorance.

#40, That is absolutely correct.
"Unlicensed" doesn't mean "illegal", it means that the person does not hold a license.
Weberman MAY have the "ability" to provide counseling as a member of the clergy, however that does not make him licensed.
Licensure is a process, with applications, rules, and approval. There is no such thing as being "sort-of licensed" or "almost licensed" Either you are, or you aren't. Weberman wasn't.
I did not bring it up because I was more concerned about the rest of the post, IE, his saying that Weberman was a "a hero who fights against child molesters" who apparently also locks himself in bedrooms with young girls, for "counseling"

1) as I mentioned early it is yet to be proven that he is a licensed or ordained clergy
2) His Rabbi has yet to come out and say that his followers are to report abuse to the authorities and not first to him to prove that he has Raglayim l'davar. So did he in fact tell the Satmar Rebbe that he himself took the girl's father to the rendezvous place and videotaped the encounter before he took that evidence to the DA's office?

1) nobody said he could not, they said he is not licensed. In other words, his total training might be Smicha, so he may be "allowed" to be a therapist, but having Smicha in Yoreh Deah (if he has even that) hardly qualifies one to actually be a therapist. That is why the words "unlicensed" as opposed to "illegal" were used.
2) So far, even from his own attorney during opening remarks, there has been no dispute as to the doors being locked during their sessions. The presence of a bed in his place of work has not been disputed as well.

Think for a minute, about the facts not in dispute.
He was with her, alone, for 12 hours a week. In intense conversation.
Do you know of ANY healthy man who spends that much time in seclusion with an adolescent girl?
I daresay that 12 hours of one-on-one time is more than most married couples have. And for three years!!
Oh, and don't forget - also not in dispute - their "therapy" did include "sex talk"
How can you accept sending a girl like this to a MAN to talk about sex with him?

How about I create a fact that you know nothing about this case, will that do??? Were you in court? Did you follow anything? The DA himself announced that there were other victims that came forward but because of the harassment and intimidation of the community they are afraid to testify. Rabbi Horowitz, himself said that victims came to him but were afraid to testify. THOSE ARE THE FACTS!
Here are some more facts, the victim testified that because she went through with the prosecution of Weberman her nieces were thrown out of school. THOSE ARE FACTS. Care to deny them?

A cantor is only recognized by the state if he is certified as such by a recognized institution (institutions which train their clergy in therapy). You can't just say that you are baal koreh once in a while so you're a cantor and are automatically a licensed therapist.
