United Nations – UN Calls On Israel To Open Nuclear Facilities

United Nations – The U.N. General Assembly overwhelmingly approved a resolution Monday calling on Israel to quickly open its nuclear program for inspection and backing a high-level conference to ban nuclear weapons from the Middle East which was just canceled.

All the Arab nations and Iran had planned to attend the conference in mid-December in Helsinki, Finland, but the United States announced on Nov. 23 that it wouldn’t take place, citing political turmoil in the region and Iran’s defiant stance on nonproliferation. Iran and some Arab nations countered that the real reason for the cancellation was Israel’s refusal to attend.

The resolution, approved by a vote of 174-6 with 6 abstentions, calls on Israel to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty “without further delay” and open its nuclear facilities to inspection by the International Atomic Energy Agency. Those voting “no” were Israel, the U.S., Canada, Marshall Islands, Micronesia and Palau.

Resolutions adopted by the 193-member General Assembly are not legally binding but they do reflect world opinion and carry moral and political weight.

Israel refuses to confirm or deny it has nuclear bombs though it is widely believed to have a nuclear arsenal. It has refused to join the Nuclear Nonproliferation Treaty, or NPT, along with three nuclear weapon states — India, Pakistan and North Korea.

The Arab proposal to create a weapons-of-mass-destruction-free zone in the Mideast, and to pressure Israel to give up its undeclared arsenal of perhaps 80 nuclear warheads, was endorsed at an NPT conference in 1995 but never acted on. In 2010, the 189 parties to the 1970 treaty called for convening a conference in 2012 on the establishment of a WMD-free zone in the Middle East.

The resolution, which was approved by the assembly’s disarmament committee before the conference was cancelled, noted the decision to hold it “with satisfaction.”

But Israel has long said there first must be a Mideast peace agreement before the establishment of a Mideast zone free of weapons of mass destruction. The region’s Muslim nations argue that Israel’s undeclared nuclear arsenal presents the greatest threat to peace in the region.

Just before Monday’s vote, Iranian diplomat Khodadad Seifi told the assembly “the truth is that the Israeli regime is the only party which rejected to conditions for a conference.” He called for “strong pressure on that regime to participate in the conference without any preconditions.”

Israeli diplomat Isi Yanouka said his country has continuously pointed to the danger of nuclear proliferation in the Mideast, singling out Iran and Syria by name.

“All these cases challenge Israel’s security and cast a dark shadow at the prospect of embarking on a meaningful regional security process,” he said.

“The fact that the sponsors include in this anti-Israeli resolution language referring to the 2012 conference proves above all the ill-intent of the Arab states with regard to this conference,” Yanouka said.

Syrian diplomat Abdullah Hallak told the assembly his government was angry that the conference wasn’t going to take place because of “the whim of just one party, a party with nuclear warheads.”

“We call on the international community to put pressure on Israel to accept the NPT, get rid of its arsenal and delivery systems, in order to allow for peace and stability in our region,” he said.

The conference’s main sponsors are the U.S., Russia and Britain. British Foreign Office Minister Alistair Burt has said it is being postponed, not cancelled.

While the United States voted against the resolution, it voted in favor of two paragraphs in it that were put to separate votes. Both support universal adherence to the NPT, and call on those countries that aren’t parties to ratify it “at the earliest date.” The only “no” votes on those paragraphs were Israel and India.

It’s amazing that people were talking about what might happen to world opinion if Israel would’ve invaded Gaza. Turns out, they hate us no matter what we do.

That was a very important vote by the Useless Nobodies.

We’ve seen over the past 50 years how irresponsible Israel is with its nukes. they must be reigned in immediately!

Israel is being more and more deminished politically and more and more isolated on a daily basis, the whole world is against israel, and the way it looks now, israel will sooner or later have to give up all the ’67 grabs, the preasure is getting more and more intense, soon the international boycotts will start and just like we saw the last 2 votes in the UN, no one backs israel besides the US which is also isolating the US, and the US can’t keep doing it, or they risk becoming irrelevent, so the words of the holy satmarer rebba that the “medina” will cease to exist before moshiach comes, is really something that is not unimaginable anymore. And let’s hope it will only be politically and not Chas V’shulem any bloodshed!

Here’s a sophomoric question for the Muslims: How exactly, pray tell, is Israel’s arsenal a threat to the region?

Israel has allegedly had nukes for decades and hasn’t used them even against vicious enemies, so they have, by default, already proven their trustworthiness.

But I do not wonder why they want Israel to discard their nukes. They feel that the day will come for an all-out war against Israel, and they “feel” that the existence of nukes in Israel’s arsenal a bit worrisome…
    Can’t say I blame them.

Not only should Israel be made to opens it’s nuclear facilities to inspection,it should be made to be the tour group leader for inspections in Iran, North Korea too.

I don’t remember such a time when Israel was isolated like this. It says something about the world when you are are isolated more than North Korea.
At the other end, Israel should do what is in its interests, not the worlds interests.

Those autocratic regimes in the world are threatened by the accomplishments of Israel. They threaten their own people as we see in Syria. We know that we live by open miracles. We need to do what is right and Hashem will stand with us.

Once again we see that when it comes to resolutions against Israel, the United Nations are truly united. And of course Obama’s team has caved

The blatant hatred towards Israel from almost the entire world is hard to miss. I’m just a lost at what it is that they hate about Israel so much. With respect to the Arab countries surrounding Israel and all around Israel its obviously a deep hatred, but the many other countries in the world is what puzzles me. I think it’s a jealously like nothing else – jealous at Israel that despite being a small country it is yet so strong and vibrant and advanced in every way that puts the rest of these countries to shame- that’s what burn these countries to no end and so of course they take their anger and jealously to the UN to try and vent. I think its that simple. Curious if theres anyone that might agree with me.

40,000 Syrians have been killed during the civil war and the UN has done nothing. Putin killed 100,000 Chechens in the mid 90s and the UN did nothing. Clinton killed 2,000 Serbs in the mid 90s and the UN did nothing. Thousands of Iraqi civilians were killed in the two Gulf wars and the UN did nothing. Iran has repeatedly stated its intention to destroy Israel and has rebuffed inspections and the UN has done nothing. Why should Israel listen to the UN?

The problem with the nukes is that we hadnt use them against our enemies. USA used it in Hiroshima and the whole world respect us. Use some limited nukes in Iran nuke facilities and see how the rest of the world vill have coved and pachad for us.

I’m glad I scrolled back and found your posting.

The Terutzim are too lengthy to write comprehensively.

The Sefer “V’Yoel Moshe” was written by The Satmar Rebbe Z’L whose Ahavas-Yisroel, (including having love and giving assistance) to ALL Yidden is legendary.
His acts of indiscriminate Chessed would fill volumes.

He only hated those that Dovid Hamelech hated, namely, enemies of Hashem.
(“Umisanechu Essneh”. “…and your enemies I do hate”. Tehillim.)

He was also indisputably a tremendous Talmid-Chochom who gained the respect, admiration and even awe of all the Gedolai-Torah, including, but not limited to, Reb Ahron Kotler Z’L, Reb Moshe Feinstein Z’L, the Minchas-Yitzchok, Reb Yaakov Kamenetzki Z’L, Rav J.B. Soloveitchik Z’L, Reb Yonason Shteif Z’L, the genius Rosh-Yeshiva of Nitra Reb Michoel Ber Weismandel, Z’L etc. etc. and the Tzaddikim of Tzelem, Pupah, Bobov, Bluzhiv and even Belz.
    The list is endless.
The “Babeh Sali, Reb Yisroel Abuchatzirah Z’L described him as “Kodesh Kodesh Kodesh”.
Even his opponents and adversaries regarded him as a Torah force to be reckoned with.

Suffice it to say that his “credentials” are impeccable..
