Spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says a group of police officers were on guard near the site in Hebron when a Palestinian approached, pulled out a handgun and aimed it at them in a threatening way.
Rosenfeld says the officers opened fire, killing the man. He says the gun later turned out to be fake. An investigation has been launched into the incident.
Israeli-Palestinian tensions are high in the biblical city. Much of the animosity surrounds a holy site, sacred to Jews as the Tomb of the Patriarchs and to Muslims as the Ibrahimi Mosque.
About 500 Israelis live there in heavily guarded enclaves amid 170,000 Palestinians.
Can we get Sharpton on this. Why are they shooting people with fake guns?
Can’t expect anyone to recognize that it’s a fake gun.
Pull a gun, real or fake, on a policeman, or anyone else, at your own (stupid) risk!
