In Florida wearing a helmet is not mandatory. People there ride motorcycles without a helmet.

The helmet may not be mandatory, but yielding to a cyclist in the bike lane is.

To the lovely people who posted before me. A man has DIED. The article here says he was in the Bike Lane. His death is a TRAGEDY. And his non-helmet usage is irrelevant, as it seems that someone else disobeyed traffic rules or was unaware of the bicyclist.
Your discussion about Florida’s rules, etc, and anyone’s following them is asinine.
Score another moment of idiocy to commenters on VIN.
To a senseless tragedy we don’t start blaming helmets. As if YOU know that a blow to the head killed him. Who knows? Any accident between a motor vehicle and a bicycle will not end well for the bicyclist. And if he’s a senior citizen, his odds of emergin unscathed presumably go down significantly.
If he has a family, עמם אנכי בצרה. What an awful way to end life, exercising on a beautiful day. רחמנא לצלן. And לא עלינו. Baruch Dayan HaEmes

    To poster 1 and 2
A Jew just died Where is your Rachamim not even an expression of Boruch Dayan Emes or a statement of may his family no anymore sorrow? Only accusatory finger pointing at someone that was following the law?
There is no guarantee had he been wearing a helmet that the outcome would have been different as A)We don’t know full facts of case and various traumas occurred B)Regardless of the fact that one should always wear a helmet ,getting hit by a car might be a fatal blow for any elderly person or someone who might have had other conditions .
May we have only Simchas in Klal Yisrael and may he be a Maylitz Yosher for all.

I have suffered 2 bike accidents. One, 20 years ago, where I was run off the road by a very fast moving truck. I went into a concrete culvert head first. The second time, about a year ago, I was hit by a car and went about 10 or 15 feet in the air. I landed on the pavement head first. Both times the ER doc said I would probably have died if I hadn’t had a helmet on. So sorry to hear of this man’s death. But please fellow Yidden, wear a helmet (that also means strapping it too).

I am totally shocked at all the cold comments here. Does no one have any common sense? Everyone is an expert all of a sudden on helmet use, laws, and other nonsense.

BDE….so why isn’t the driver going to be charged? He clearly hit the man in the “BIKE” lane….Wouldn’t that be manslaughter (voluntary or involuntary)??

Why will the driver not be charged? The guy was riding in a bike lane, where a car doesn’t belong?

Are people allowed to get away with murder in Florida?

    An outcry is called for!!!!!

First, I would like to extend my sympathy to the family who lost their loved one.

I saw this accident yesterday morning and saw the extent of this man’s head injuries. I am no expert, but it’s my opinion that a helmet would likely have prevented his untimely and tragic death.

People like to belive in stupid things which are not grounded in fact, based on emotional feelings which are not fact.

For example, right now, the entire country is in an emotional irrational frenzy to be more restrictive on guns but that is 100% irrational and is based only on mindless emotions because the fact is that stricter Gun laws can never EVER prevent mindless school shootings by deranged people as has always been in the case so efforts to restrict guns will gain us nothing at all to prevent such tragedies.

    Same is true regarding Helmets.

Mindless EMOTIONAL thinking makes everyone “feel” that a bikers should use helmets because of the EMOTION when we see bikers close to moving vehicle.

This is not grounded in actual fact as compared to pedestrians walking the street and being hit by vehicles and killed in far greater numbers than bikers, yet very few people advocate helmets to pedestrians.

Fact is, many many more 0 actually countless more pedestrians are hit statistically far more often than bikers and they are killed by vehicles (where their lives could theoretically have been saved by a helmet.

Google: Vancouver’s pedestrians as the new Pedestrian

My condolences to this man’s family.

I witnessed this accident on my way to work yesterday. After seeing the extent of his injuries, there is little doubt in my mind that a helmet could have saved Mr. Gross’s life.

As a fellow bike rider, with thousands of miles; I have seen many bikers on the ground and some with head injures.

I wear a helmet, but be aware that many studies have shown the a helmet can be counter intuitive. Helmets often limit the mobility of riders, etc. The riders cannot view the sides as good or bend their heads diring driving. There are more studies on the subject.
