Washington - A controversial genetically engineered salmon has moved a step closer to the consumer’s dining table after the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said Friday the fish didn’t appear likely to pose a threat to the environment or to humans who eat it.

AquAdvantage salmon eggs would produce fish with the potential to grow to market size in half the time of conventional salmon. It would be the first food from a transgenic animal - one whose genome has been altered - that has been approved by the FDA.

The AquAdvantage Atlantic salmon egg was developed by AquaBounty Technology,, to speed up production to meet global seafood demand.

In a draft environmental assessment Friday, the FDA affirmed earlier findings that the biotech salmon was not likely to be harmful. It said it would take comments from the public on its report for 60 days before making a final decision on approval.

AquaBounty officials said they were caught by surprise by the FDA’s news that it was a step closer to approval, as years of controversy had followed the company’s application for the go-ahead from the regulator.

“We are encouraged that the environmental assessment is being released and hope the government continues the science-based regulatory process,” said AquaBounty CEO Ronald Stotish.

Critics say the new salmon is a “dangerous experiment” and have pressured FDA to reject the genetically engineered salmon.

They said Friday they may file a lawsuit to prevent what they fear could be imminent approval of the engineered fish on the grounds that the FDA has failed to conduct a thorough assessment and because it wasn’t clear if the fish would pose a threat to people who eat it or to wild fish.

They were also concerned the FDA wouldn’t require the fish to be labeled.

“Congress can still keep FDA from unleashing this dangerous experiment,” said Wenonah Hauter, executive director of Food & Water Watch, a consumer advocacy group. “Although this latest FDA decision is a blow to consumer confidence, we encourage everyone to contact their members of Congress and demand this reckless decision be overturned.”

The Center for Food Safety, another non-profit consumer protection group, was highly critical of the FDA report, and officials said they might sue the regulator over the issue.

“It is extremely disappointing that the Obama Administration continues to push approval of this dangerous and unnecessary product,” said Andrew Kimbrell, executive director for Center for Food Safety. “The GE salmon has no socially redeeming value. It’s bad for the consumer, bad for the salmon industry and bad for the environment.”

FDA spokeswoman Morgan Liscinsky said no final decisions had been made on labeling or on the application for approval.

“The release of these materials is not a decision on whether food from AquAdvantage Salmon requires additional labeling; nor is it a decision on the new animal drug application currently under review. It also does not provide a final food safety determination,” Liscinsky said.

Andrew Kimbrell, executive director for Center for Food Safety said: “The GE salmon has no socially redeeming value." Well, aside from making food cheaper and more plentiful, thus helping people eat better.
I've got to wonder if Mr. Kimbrell ever went hungry.

Anyone care to chime in on kosher status of said transgenic creature?

This is awful. When are people going to wake up? GMOs are horrible for your body. It will just mean one more thing my family can't eat.

Look at the disclaimer language they use: "the fish didn't appear likely to pose a threat" - "wasn't clear if the fish would pose a threat". The FDA (in my book the Food Deception Agency) may not label it as genetically modified! This is foolish and dangerous. What's next? Chickens the size of turkeys? Cows the size of elephants? Don't think the mutation won't affect humans who consume it!

We eat a lot of salmon. How would I know if it's a GMF if the FDA doesn't mandate labeling? We have the right to know what we're eating.

Exactly. I think stuff like this is horrible too! When will we be hearing about the next potential threatening food?! Why won't they just leave our foods BE?!

No wonder 1 in 88 children have Autism in this country! The amount of poisons & toxins we put in our food, drinks, pesticides, etc. is probably enough to kill several Earths 2 times over, it's just our bodies have grown used to the garbage now!

Our ancestors would have a really hard time w\stomach issues, if they had to eat the junk that's in the supermarket too! There's hardly anything fresh or organic anymore, and if it is, it's terribly expensive & your average middle class family can't really afford to eat like that!

Yeah, we were told smoking and asbestos were safe too.

At least here they are protecting themselves by saying 'it doesn't appear to kill you' but then wait 30 years and we may change our minds.

We're already eating too many GMF's that we don't know about. Proposition 37 in CA would have been a great start to national labeling if the morons there would have passed it.

Will they have fins and scales? Presumably so. Therefore, there is no reason why it would not be Kosher.

As far as (presumably) Mrs. #3, just understand that if there are foods that you do not allow your family to eat due to your own health concerns, your kids will find ways to get it. (Well, maybe not fish - but this goes for all those parents who really think their kids aren't getting candy and soda from other sources.)

You make me laugh, I know your type You don't go see a doctor when you're sick cause he'll poison you with his GM drugs LOL! And you are right the reason life expectancy gets higher and higher in America is probably because we eat all these poison!

My family only eats organic foods. I don't buy anything with GMOs in them, no food dyes, no trans fat. My kids complain, but they also understand. Every person needs to do their own research. If you are not buying organic, corn, soy, and canola are the worst culprits. Almost all of those in this country are GMO. Europe has banned it. We are lagging behind. Look IP Monsanto. They are a vile and evil corporation only interested in their bottom line. They work hand in hand with Dupont, the makers of chemicals and pesticides. Do your research. This is going directly into your body.
I personally think that all of this, the GMOs, food dyes, pesticides, etc. are the reason we have so many issues from cancer to food allergies to autism.
Do your research.

Yes, and don't forget to wear you tinfoil hats, you and your whole mispacha, at all times! Your kids might complain, but will eventually understand...

Do your own research. Mock all you want. How come millions of other people know this? How come Europehas banned them. Even the Monsanto cafeteria has banned their own product.
Obama, Bush, Clinton, Romney, they all eat only organic. Maybe ask yourself why? What for they know that they aren't telling us?
I already lost one child to cancer. I will do everything in power for it not to happen again.
