Sen. Jeffrey Klein (KLINE), who sponsored the law with bipartisan support, praised his co-leader, Senate Republican leader Dean Skelos and the Democratic conference.

Senate Republicans have opposed similar measures in past years when they solely controlled the Senate.

Klein says the bill isn’t about taking the rights away from any legal gun owner.

The bill targets assault rifles, high-capacity clips of ammunition and requires reports of the mentally ill who pose a threat to others with illegal guns.

The vote passed 43-18 in the Senate thanks to a strong Democratic vote.

The Democrat-led Assembly is expected to easily pass the measure.

Having read some of the bill, I doubt it can pass constitutional muster, and restricts firearms to ridiculous levels.
I’m so glad I live in a FREE STATE where it has been proposed to make it a felony to enforce federal gun laws!
6,000,000 Jews were just disarmed by the government again…

Some more useless feel good legislation that will not deter another shooting. All mass shootings are suicide missions. They do not care about the laws or tougher penalties. They all end up dead after the deed is done.

I read the entire bill last night.
It is nearly an outright ban of semi-automatic firearms.
Over seven round capacity = BANNED!
My century-old design .45 Automatic has 8-round magazines.
The M1 Garand, a WWII relic, is allowed but the 8-round en bloc clips – actual clips, not magazines – are banned because they hold 8 rounds. They date to nearly 80 years ago, and 43″ and 10 pounds in a semi-obsolete caliber doesn’t mean ‘assault weapon’.
These banned Garand clips are available commercially for less than $1 each.
This will cost NY jobs, every remaining arms company will be out of the state as quickly as possible.
This stupidity is going to cost NY dearly!

Also, I plotz that everyone involved in this legislation has zero knowledge on firearms and shooting.

Silver wants assault rifles “off the streets of NY???” There are none on the streets. Only 5 murders by “rifle” during the entire 2011, while 26 were murdered by “hand and feet.” Will there be even one less shooting in Crown Heights because of this ban? The answer is no.

In Crown Heights, the gangsters don’t pay $400 to apply for a license at their local precinct, and head to the gun shop to submit to a background check. The criminal shooters have a permanent exemption to these laws.

P.S. the 2nd amendment gives the people the right to be armed in order to defy the government. I guess the government is pretty fed up with that one…

I hope this liberwacky “assault weapon” bill takes on knives, clubs, screwdrivers too.

They aren’t “assault weapons” they are protection weapons and the RINOs are following like sheep.

Of course this will get the gun-rights nuts out in force…this is common-sense legislation that ought to be the absolute baseline nationwide. We don’t allow individuals to possess tanks and drones, and automatic weapons with huge clips are no different.

Nice that some politicians are doing the right thing, and doing what most of Americans want rather than kowtowing to the gun manufacturers and dealers (and the blind sheeple that tow the NRA nonsense line).
