Tel Aviv - Tensions have flared and smear campaigns have taken hold in Israel ahead of the opening of polls in the Israeli national elections.

Unidentified vandals set fire to several Torah books at the Shas party headquarters in Or Yehuda on Saturday night, Israel Radio reported.

Shas MK Ariel Atias said the incident was a result of months of incitement against spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef and the Shas movement.

Attias said that we have seen in the past that words can become actions, and now we see that again. He added that the scenes of vandalism are reminiscent of scenes the Jewish people would prefer to forget, Israel Radio quoted him as saying.

I'm not surprised. He was just quoted in the press as calling his opponents "a bunch of goyim." So now they're acting like a bunch of goyim.

If he had called them "a bunch of levi'im", they would probably have acted like a bunch of hot-tempered Jews. But Jews nonetheless.

Imagine something like this happening in Europe or the US.
The Sochnot and the prime minister would be calling out on jews to leave to Israel which is the only place for jews to be safe.

You are corrupting the Gemara and you are doing "Chilul Hashem" [Avos 1:11, in the name of Avtalion]!!
The Gemara says that one who moves from Bavel [only] to Eretz Israel violates a Mitzvas HaNeviim, who command the Jews to stay there [Bavel] until Mashiach, and the Rambam includes this in the "Yad". [the reason being that Bavel was then the seat of Torah, up the end of Geonic period] However, the Gemara there [end of Kesuvos] says that its a Mitzvah to move, or even visit, the Land of Israel [from other lands], and the Sages would roll in the dust when they entered the border of the Land, etc. The Rambam brings this all down in the 12th Perek of Hilchos Melachim. Tosfos [end of Kesuvos] says that it may not be a Mitzvah to travel to the Land because of the severe danger of sea/ land travel [in his days], and Pikuach Nefesh outweighs most Mitzvos. The Achronim have written that nowadays [even several hundred years ago] this is not the case, and it's a Mitzvah to live/travel to the Land. Obviously, until Mashiach come, everyone cannot make aliya to the Land, and each person/family must take guidance from this Rav. But all this has nothing to do with your MISQUOTE!!

Aside fot the fact that this is deplorable, contrary to popular belief the Yalkut Yosef set that was burned is written by R’ Yitzchak Yosef, not his father! It does feature R’ Ovadia’s psakim though. Apparantly whoever burned them never actually read them...
