Jerusalem - Thousands of haredi men and women gathered at Kikar Shabbat in Jerusalem鈥檚 ultra-Orthodox Mea Shearim neighborhood to greet and listen to the Grand Rabbi of the Satmar hassidic dynasty Rabbi Zalman Leib Teitelbaum on Sunday night.
The massive gathering was called to demonstrate against participation in Tuesday鈥檚 general election, and the thousands of attendees were told not to vote in the upcoming ballot.
Satmar is a fiercely anti-Zionist hassidic group and its leaders view any interaction with the State of Israel as prohibited, due to the secular foundations of its laws and an interpretation of a Talmudic passage which they say forbids Jews from setting up a sovereign state in the Land of Israel before the arrival of the Messiah.
The protest was organized in conjunction with the equally anti-Zionist Eda Haredit communal association, and the leading rabbis of the organization also addressed the crowd.
Festive lights were festooned along Mea Shearim Street and in Kikar Shabbat, while banners with celebratory verses from the Bible were strung across the main square and its approaches to welcome the rebbe.
Huge signs declaring that voting in the election is forbidden according to the Torah accompanied the more joyful decorations.
Rabbi Teitelbaum, who lives in New York, arrived in Israel on Sunday afternoon, and was provided with a police escort on his way to Jerusalem.
As well as to protest the elections, the Satmar Rebbe is also in the country for the wedding of one of his granddaughters.
The spiritual leader of the non-hassidic haredi world Rabbi Aharon Leib Shteinman, along with the Grand Rabbis of the Viznitz and Belz hassidic groups among others, have in contrast repeatedly called on their followers to vote in the upcoming elections, saying that do so is a religious obligation.
The Haredi rabbinic leadership has repeatedly declared this election to be a time of religious emergency due to proposed legislation they see as threatening to the ultra-Orthodox world, lifestyle and interests.
Proposed legislation to rescind the mass exemptions from military service which full-time yeshiva students were able to claim until last August is one of the leading issues of concern for the haredi leadership.

If this Satmar Rebbe (and there are two, competing rebbes) did not want to benefit from the Medina, why did he accept a police escort???
I've suggested to many anti-Zionist acquaintances that they not travel to Eretz Israel since there are soldiers and security personnel who guard them 24/7, and it is hypocritical to accept such protection and then defame the state which offers such protection.
It's not Rav Zalmen saying it. This is what he was brought up with and this is was his father and his great uncle, the first satmar rebbe, said. Although I don't agree 100% with the satmar shita, I nevertheless give him credit for saying what he believes is right, although unpopular. As one of his followers pointed out "we're proud to have a rebbe whose not ashamed with the daas torah of our previous rebbes"
Pure genius, cutting off their noses to spite their face.. Love the kids ripping the newspaper and all that litter...who said nonsense cannot be entertaining?
Fortunately, a growing number of the Satmar in EY are simply ignoring the rebbe and participating in the elections. As a percentage of total voters, the Satmer percentage is relatively small although they could be an important factor if they vote as a bloc. Their virulent hatred of EY is making them increasingly irrelevant
My father bemoaned the fact that he did not have any weapons to fight back when the Nazis showed up. He and many survivors--and their children--are grateful to HaShem that we see Jews willing and able to defend Jews, not only in Israel but around the world. The Mossad goes after anti-Semites, not just anti-Zionist groups. (The Egyptian president called both Jews and "Zionists" the "descendents of monkeys and pigs.")
The Satmar rebbe himself was saved by Zionists. That is an historical fact.
So what does he think should be done about governing Israel? Does he think another sort of governing body would care any more about yeshivas or about other Jewish interests? Maybe he should work with the government to strengthen observance of Jewish laws.
Torah requires civil dignity. The antecedence to corrupt the soul is the wish of only men who wish to release their fears of modern society upon a world that they have reluctantly left behind. Vote and be proud. You deserve the dignity.
I don't count myself as a R Zalmen Lieb supporter. But its a kiddish hashem to see thousands of jews coming out to embrace the torah thoughts of Rabieny Ba"al V'yoel Moshe Zt"l.
Its now more than ever that our brothers in Eretz Yisroel are going through difficult life under the seculer religioun haters. A goverment & court system that works hand by hand to undermine our traditions of thousands of years.
Just on friday it was reported on VIN about the court's demand to freeze governmental support to benie yeshiva. It now got to a point that non of the religious parties are even campaigning about a stop to this shreklicha geziera. They are powerless the even speak up against it.
I never responded to commentary about my views on zionisem and the Israeli government. However, speaking to some people shobbes I asked a question of does who understand the request to mobilize the benie yeshiva. These advocates live here in the US and don't even think of registering their kids to service here or in Israel. But someone else's kids, sure, why not.
Let this rebbe speak up and maybe it will be heard someplace.
really disgusting. so anti-zionist yet reaping all the benefits of zionism at the same time. this "medina" would be just rocks and dirt if not for people who worked to build it up. have some respect, and amazingly they allow them to visit even with all the public hate. forgot to mention that the millions they brought is getting spent in the zionist economy, todah.

First of all, who says the Rabbi has an option or a saying regarding accepting a police escort Etc, or not?
#2, Regardless if we agree with his positions about Israel, He would be described as a WEEK & cowardly leader if he doesn't do whatever he thinks is right & necessary just because "soldiers and security personnel who guard them 24/7" Etc, Etc.
Lets put it this way: If your hungry, actually very hungry & its pouring rain outside (no food in the house), would you stay at home and starve yourself? Or you wouldn't mind getting "wet" in order to calm your hunger! A non satmar chosid
“

You give him credit for espousing what "he believes is right." Do you give that same credit to members of the KKK? Terrorists? Random lunatics in the street?
I guess I give you credit got saying what YOU believe is right...
This is what I like and think appropriate. Sit in America and eat staek and chulent and go to Israel and tell them not to vote and the heck with all the bochorim and young men that have to be inducted in the army. Really stir the pot. Great idea. He barely can take care of events in Williamsburg and wants people to forget the tzuris that was caused recnetly by putting a yungerman in harms way to the worst degree, so blast the tzionistin.
One says its against Torah another says it's a mitsvah. This is part of the reason for separation of church and state. The Rebbe is right, frum Jews should stick out of politics. State and religeon can't mix.
We'll the Gerrer rebbe and Buyaner and Sanzer and many more said yes to vote. vote for Gimel. But those who are satemere chasidim should take not vote!
But to say assur min hatoire so many gedoilom are oiver a de'oirase?

the arabs also believe they are right to kill Jews. Do you give them credit as well?

“
And don't forget- The Lubaticher Rebbe z''tz'vk'l'b had THREE houses in Israel and never went ONE TIME! Are you listening Satmar? ”
The Lubavicher Rebbe didnt go to EY because he was concerened about halachically being allowed to leave Eretz Yisrael once he was already there...thats quite a different reason
In spite of Satmar's desperate efforts, the fact remains that the the 90+ % of the Frum population in Israel has, and will participate in the elections. As for the remaining -10%, they wouldn't have voted anyway, such that the "Historic" visit makes no difference whatsoever.
Satmar philosophy vis a vis Israel is absolutely obsolete and outdated!
Other Chassidim like Belz and Vishnitz, to name a few, whilst not agreeing with Israeli policy across the board still allow their desciples to vote in the Israeli elections and don't badmouth the hand that feeds them and the soldiers that protect them.
If Satmar is so against the modern State of Israel, they're welcome to leave, they won't be missed!
What a fool. If they used their vote for good, instead of stealing money to be lazy bums, they could help elect a good leader for the Jewish people instead of talking out of their backside about how much they hate the state while loving the benefits from it and the protection they enjoy. Time to remove your women's stockings and join the 21st century
chaval.......after all these years of galut and tzaros, some people still have not found a way to see the good in others. Our best hope is ACHDUS, but it seems that some people cannot grasp this concept.
Let us hope for better days and more enlightened leaders and gedoilim.

it is the zionist philosophy that is obsolete and outdated - nationalism is so 1890's - Satmar is growing and Israel is shrinking
"self defense pushes aside every rule in the torah" When the Satmar Rebbi takes personal responsibility for the safety of every Jew in Israel he will have a right to say what he is saying.

Shame on you! How much have you benefited from Satmar and its chesed here in America?? There is no other group that has done so much for humanity - all instilled by the Satmar Rebbe zt"l. Their moisdos in Eretz Yisroel do NOT take money from the government!!!!! These yidden in Yerushalayim are there for generations - long before 1948 when the medina was established. Were they supposed to move en masse out of their ancestral homes? Whether you agree with the Rebbe's (zt"l) shitta or not, you cannot deny the fact that he was a brilliant Tzaddik Hador who garnered the respect of all the leading Rabbanim of both the chasidishe world as well as the litvishe one!
hmm, I had better look back in the Torah to see the pasuk that forbids voting 'cause most charadim in EY don't know about it, (also the Rabbis here seem to miss it too!)
“
Thanks to the Tziyonim that the Satmar Rebbe was saved. Anyone know what the fate to Reb Yoel Chasidim who stayed behind in Hunagry?! ”
His greatness was not truly appreciated until AFTER the war. Those left behind, were sent to their deaths. One of the only reasons he was saved, the UNTOLD story is that kastner needed the rabbis/gedolim as a human shield to save HIS family. Knowing how many in Cluj payed to save their families, the trains would have been stormed if they only held his close associates.
Those are the facts jack, whether you like them or not, as my whole family absent my father was left there in that farshtunkinak brick factory to die.

maybe you are right and kastner needed the rebbe ( maybe not.. maybe he did it for othe rreasons) but the fact is he helped to save the rebbe he also helped to save about 1800 other jews i personally know two adults who were on the train as children and they all survived and grew and have grandchildren and great grandchildren
“

Want to give him credit, too? ”
I don't support Satmar's views on Zionism but to equate the halachic position of the Satmar Rebbe with the vile position of the Nazi's y"s -- or of the KKK etc as done on an earlier post -- is a disgrace. It shows how distorted the thinking of some people are.

Since your statment is not true. Please show us where is the posuk in the tora that says it is a mitzva to lie.

so please do not denigrate kastners actions; ”
Kol Hakovod to them. I probably would not be around if my grandparents were saved. DO NOT try to parse what Kastner did!! He did it for selfish reasons and under false pretenses. This I got out of my father's mouth who was there In klosenburg as they call it.
The fact that the rebbe and others came and went along for the ride, does not justify what he did, and he had no way of knowing the outcome or the greatness of the rabbis or people that were on that train. You are trying to give dispensation to the bank robber, who gives the proceeds to a yeshiva. You know all those Baal Tzeddakah's who use swindled , ponzi schme money I am referring too.

“
what a kiddush hashem, satmar rebbe will give $100 for evryone who doesnt vote in tuma bechiros ”
Why don't you get over it, and stop the mockery? That $100 per non-voter is a piece of propaganda put out by some pranksters and picked up by the Israeli media last week. Since they have realized that it was a hoax it has not been mentioned any longer.
It was the Sochnut and its delegate in Budapest Rudolf Kastner and the large amount of cash from Satmarer chasidim which enabled the Satmar Rebbe zyl to escape the Nazis while others were shipped to Birkenau's gas chambers
“

Ayn Mitzvah Beday Aveirah ”
i am not giving any dispensations to any one
kastner helped save the lives of about 1800 jews during the horror of the holocaust. you can question his motives but it is still a mitzvah to save a jewish life period.
"does not justify what he did" how can you imply saving the lives of your family and friends is wrong. sadly, he could not save more lives. ultimately this was the will of the Almighty
there is nothing negative about saving lives, except as you suggest he didnt help to save your relatives ( nor mine) savng just one life is like saving an entire world !
ultimately, God will judge not me nor you my friend i understand your fathers anger but it should be directed elsewhere as these were amongst the most trying times in our peoples history. i do not judge your father nor do i judge kastner we need unity and mutual respect across all segments of our people
“
No other group has done so much for humanity?????? You must be joking. Please, show me what Satmar has done for ALL of humankind. ”
I did not write "ALL of humankind." I wrote "humanity." You know, when the Satmar Rebetzin a"h (who founded Satmar Bikur Cholim) used to make her rounds in the hospitals, if there were any roommates of the patients, black, white, Hispanic, etc., she would automatically offer the same package of food to them. As many people knew, the Satmar Rebbe zt"l and his Rebetzin a"h were incredible humanitarians. They went to incredible lengths to help other Yidden - no matter where they belonged. I don't think that anyone would dispute that!
There are those that are truly blind and cannot appreciate a lofty mountain range or a sunrise or a rainbow. I truly pity those people. They cannot see the miracles and nissim of Hashem and cannot appreciate all that Hashem does for us.
We are coming up to Purim. There were tremendous nissim that were done for Bnai Yisroel. Esther had to fight with the Sanhedrin to declare it a nes. Baruch Hashem that she won.
Now we come to zman hazeh, the present times. There are those who are blind and cannot see the nissim that Hashem has provided for the world's Jews. They cannot see the kibbutz goliot (ingathering of the exiles). They cannot see that there is a Jewish government and a Jewish Army to protect it's citizens. All they see are 'zionist plots'. They deny that Hashem is behind the events of the world. They listen to a bassar vadam, their 'rebbe' as the voice of hashem. Those are the truly blind people.

Or you wouldn't mind getting "wet" in order to calm your hunger!

kastner helped save the lives of about 1800 jews during the horror of the holocaust.
you can question his motives but it is still a mitzvah to save a jewish life period.
"does not justify what he did" how can you imply saving the lives of your family and friends is wrong. sadly, he could not save more lives. ultimately this was the will of the Almighty
there is nothing negative about saving lives, except as you suggest he didnt help to save your relatives ( nor mine) savng just one life is like saving an entire world !
ultimately, God will judge not me nor you my friend
