Rockland County, NY - Two members of the nine-member East Ramapo Board of Education have tendered their resignation to school board president Daniel Schwartz before the completion of their terms on June 30, LoHud.com reports (http://lohud.us/10ImW99).

Schwartz declined to comment on the reason for the sudden exit of Stephen Price and Suzanne Young-Mercer, the only two board representatives who were neither Orthodox Jewish nor Hasidic, but said he accepted their resignations with regret and wished them well in their endeavors.

The East Ramapo Board of Education has been plagued by class-action lawsuits and allegations of misappropriation of funds on the part of the remaining seven Orthodox Jewish board members.

Interim members will be appointed in lieu of Price and Young-Mercer until the next school board election is held in May.

Private slush fund? Where is the money going? Also, even before this new bloc took over, taxes were going up every year even though enrollment was going down. Why do we continue to pay more and more when the school district servers fewer kids?

Can it be that Mr. Price and Ms. Young-Mercer know what may be coming? I laud Mr. Price's selfless twenty year commitment and Ms. Young-Mercer's insight during her short stay. Sad. Luke

I Grew up in east ramapo in the 60s and 70s. The public school population was white middle class who valued higher education, the population theses days can hardly speak english much less score decently on a SAT. During your time there was zero services to the private schools other then bussing and an occasional reading teacher. The board members are being sued by a bunch of malcontents who ran for the board and lost the suit is without merit and is going nowhere. There was 1 member who was arrested and it had nothing to do with the school board and FYI he was from your faction. BTW the tax rates numbers decreased since you lost power. Sorry this is the USA majority rules or is it only when you are in the majority

You are not entirely correct. Majority rule in the U.S. does not extend to depriving people of services they are legally entitled to just b/c the majority chooses to do so. You cannot divert funds to purchase religious texts with public money just b/c you are in the majority. Moreover, I have watched footage of Board meetings and the students and parents, white and non-white, seem to be generally well-spoken, intelligent, and concerned for their childrens' educations.

for the past 20 years the graduation failure rate for both SV and Ramapo High averaged 35%, that is dismal and the predated the frum majority on the board, the only ppl who were depived of services for years was the frum community when they were not in power, the public schools get everything they are entitled to plus a whole lot more. The students were almost arrested last year for getting into the face of a board member and intimidating him. and the textbook story is simply hogwash. Face the facts it was ok for you to shove things down the frum community when we were in the minority but when we are the majority we are all of a sudden we cant, what a bunch of hypocrites

Mr annonoumous , you are either misinformed or your a liar. Before the "Bloc" the kids where failing and the taxes were going up like crazy, since the Bloc test scores have gone up and they are doing the best they can with the budget. The main prob is the unions, not the frum erlich board members that give of their limited time to help ALL ER tax payers.

I'm a member of the frum community and have watched the proceedings via video. Our frum brethren are divisive and ill-prepared to run this school board. The textbook story does not seem to be hogwash and is the subject of a lawsuit after which you may have to face certain facts.

"The students were almost arrested last year for getting into the face of a board member and intimidating him. and the textbook story is simply hogwash."

I have read the entire NYS audit and there is almost one million dollars of textbooks that were ordered from a Monsey location and shipped to a Brooklyn Yeshiva. Do a search and you can read the entire documents. I believe there are several hundred "missing" emails regarding this purchase. The board members who resigned are quoted in the newspaper today that they were intimidated and were not having their questions answered. Steve Price is a Jew and they call him an antisemite because he votes in favor of sports and foreign languages. He has served 20 years and is highly respected. I assume the board will now appoint another two non public school parents so they can have 100% private school people.

it's a schlock board that does everything by fiat rather than darchei shalom. They don't care what non-Yidden and non-Orthodox Yidden feel about education in East Ramapo.

Georgine Hyde was jewish too and she had nothing but contempt for the private school community and served for many years. no one ever called Mr. Price an anti semite just a tax and spender, I would rather spend money on textbooks then sports does that make me a bigot? No it makes me someone who has a different set of prioritys. In fact the open Anti Semitism that is spewed by the likes of Peggy Hannon, White, Lucicanio and company is very similar to Germany 1939. The fact is for the years that the public school parents were majority they shoved all sorts of programs on us and gave away the store to the teachers union. My advice to you and poster #11 there is allways Ramapo Central, Teaneck or New Rochelle to move to.

The board spent money on textbooks but most of the titles were in Yiddish and the books wound up in Brooklyn! This is what the NY State audit is addressing. This is 100% illegal. Do yourself a favor and study the audit. It will take a few hours, but you will realize why the State is now involved and why the board must pay $750.00 per hour for a top lawyer to represent them! What about all the questionable invoices that the board will not address? Who is ordering these supplies and where are they going?

My wife and I both work full time and don't care to have our tax dollars spent on dubious items which the government is now investigating. Do you?

Please post where you read that. According to the reports from the state, test scores have gone down.

My wife and I both work ft to afford Rockland taxes and the private school tution, trust me I resent my tax money going down the drain but by comparison to the waste we endured from the 70s till the frum ppl had a majority this is a drop in the bucket by comparison. If it would not be the textbook issue u would have found something else to complain about the frum majority, admit it

I am just against fraud. Why should the taxpayers pay for Yiddish books that are sent to Brooklyn (read the State auditor's comments.) Brooklyn is not in East Ramapo!

I am not complaining about the frum majority as you say. I AM Frum but I agree with the State audit about the fraudulent practices. Why can't the board disclose where the millions of dollars are going?
