Rockland County, NY - New York State police say one person was killed when a man driving the wrong way collided head-on with another car.

The accident occurred around 8:20 p.m. Tuesday on Interstate 87 just north of the Ramapo rest area.

Police say 81-year-old Alvin Lapides, of Monsey, was traveling north in the soutbound lanes when his Toyota Camry struck a Volvo driven by a 17-year-old boy.

Lapides’ 76-year-old wife, Madeline, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was sitting in the front passenger seat of his car.

Alvin Lapides was taken to God Samaritan Hospital in Suffern with possible internal injuries.

There were no other injuries.

All those who cried bitterly over the sentence of Bernie Madoff are hereby permissioned to comment over the Weberman case. Why do we ignore one Jew over another?

I cannot believe that you equate Weberman's sentencing with the other two incidents. Whether Weberman's sentence was harsh or not, and whether or not he did everything he was accused of, his inappropriate actions was the starting point for what happened to him thereafter. How insensitive can someone be to equate the accidental death of an innocent girl or the accidental death of an innocent woman to the (possibly) harsh sentence of a man, who in no way can claim he is innocent of any wrongdoing?

As with age limits for politicians, time for age limits for drivers and pilots.

Weberman sentencing tragic? That is a sign Moshiach is close! How dare you place these 2 "tragic" car accidents in the same category as justice being served! What's tragic is that monsters like Weberman hide in the garb of religious people and religious people cover up their pernicious crimes!

In my community, there have been many accidents of drivers going the wrong way both in the daytime, and in the evening, on freeways. However, those drivers were of all ages, and were not necessarily senior citizens. Many highway entrances and exits are not properly marked to prevent these tragedies from occurring and reoccurring.

This is a really good comment. It is too easy to blame older drivers when the NYS department of transportation should be seeing to the real causes of these accidents.

Instead of red Wrong Way signs which are very confusing, and often scare people who can see them in the proper lane, they should paint the pavement with big arrows pointing in the direction of traffic.

yes, they should paint the pavement, which is very effective at night, because the signs scare people. Good idea!

If wrong-way signs scare you, PishatahYid, you don't belong behind the wheel of a car. Maybe they should paint a big arrow on your driveway, so you don't get scared going home?

Yes, two unfortunate accidental (oh, I'm sorry, "accidendal") deaths and the imprisonment of a child rapist.

Absolutely the most tragic day EVER. I mean, two accidental deaths, well, that happens, but Weberman being sentenced for what he did? This is the most tragic day ever! This will replace Tisha B'av as the saddest day of the year for all Jews from now on.

Well, how do we know that he really did what she claims? Because a Jury convicted him?? Then even if it is true, it is still the saddest day for me, and should be for Klal yisroel. Because it shows how low a frum Yid has gotten to... A Rapist?! Yeah, we can definitely count it as one of our saddest days for Klal Yisroel. And same if it is Not true, then Gevald, how low did SHE get that she's ready to falsely claim so on a fellow Jew and make such a Chilul Hashem.

I cannot Judge, and we'd never know the Truth... Until Meshiach Comes.

Agree, it is a a time to cry !

I wonder why they built the entrance and exit so closely...

BD"E... May the family be comforted by HaShem!

Destructions of the Bais Hamikdash, Tisha Bav, the holocaust, the Spanish Inquisition, and thousands of other events don't constitute sadder days for you than Weberman's conviction? what are you, his partner in these crimes?>

YOU ARE MAMASH AN IDIOT!

Yes, as an aside, if he was convicted, then he is by definition guilty of the crime. if he is innocent, why don't you do something about it?

I live in Monsey since 1976. Reading this article means that he got on the NYS Thruway at exit 14 in Nanuet at the entrance ramp to the south/eastbound NYS Thruway. He then proceeded to make a left turn or a U-turn on that ramp and drive up the Thruway in the southbound lanes. This is highly unlikely unless someone makes a really sharp left turn on that ramp. The ramp curves strongly to the right heading towards the PIP. He then drove 9 miles up? His wife didnt notice all the headlights coming straight at them? That section of the Thruway has cars on it 24/7! Only Hashem knows why and how this happened.
