FILE - Pope Benedict (R) shakes hands with Israel’s Ashkenazi chief rabbi Yona Metzger (L) during their meeting at his summer residence in Castelgandolfo, south of Rome, September 15, 2005. EPAJerusalem - Israeli chief rabbi Yona Metzger on Monday praised Pope Benedict’s inter-religious outreach and said relations between Israel and the Vatican had never been better.
“During his period (as pope) there were the best relations ever between the church and the chief rabbinate and we hope that this trend will continue,” a spokesman quoted Metzger as saying after the pope announced he would resign. “I think he deserves a lot of credit for advancing inter-religious links the world over between Judaism, Christianity and Islam.”
Metzger wished the pope “good health and long days”, the spokesman said.

RABBI ABRAHAM DOV HECHT ZT'L TOLD ME
years ago that he was invited to meet the pope. THE Rabbi refused because he did not want to be pictured GOING TO the vatican or GOING TO the pope.
INSTEAD the Rabbi invited THE POPE TO COME MEET HIM IN THE RABBIS SHUL.
THAT WAS THE WHOLE TORAH IN 5 SECONDS.

He should also have wished him a refuah shalaymah since several hours later the Pope resigned for health reasons. For the first time, there are one or two younger Cardinals who are potential papal candidates who have spoken out strongly against the latent anti-semitism in Church theology but there are also others who have been very critical of EY in the conflict with the Palestinians. I suspect there is no single candidate who we should prefer, not that we have any leverage anyway. Any Cardinal tagged as the "Jewish favorite" would likely lose support among the Church establishment.

i recently met R' Greenblatt from memphis, and he said its assur to have interfaith panels and dialogue. he then showed us an iggeres from R' moshe feinstein disalowing interfaith panels.
so why does r' metzger want to have an interfaith panel headed by the dali lama in jerusalem? cause thats one of his agendas.

As neither you nor I are at the same level as Reb Moishe or even Ha-Rav Metzger, let's just call this a machlokes gedolim rather than casting aspersions on the lomdus or tzidkus of anyone....

It depends on whether you're having an interfaith panel to seriously discuss religious issues, which is ossur, or just as a form of chanifah, which is mutar.

The pope is saying to himself, "he thinks he's gonna out-frum me with that hat? I'm gonna start wearing a hat, too. At least on Sunday."

Torah is not about premises of indoctrination of worldly causes. So it would appear that a rabbi or jew has the need to meet with the pope from time to time and he can do so at the Vatican or other places. So either way, you are incorrect, but its a nice way to be false in your pride.

The pope forgives the sins of his flock, perhaps the rabbi forgives the sin of the pope..

Does the Pope have his name on the back of that yarmulke? And if so, does it say "Pope", or "Benedict" or just "Joe", his real name? I had some knitted yarmulkes back in the '80s that a few girls made for me while I was in college (oy gevald!!) that had my name on the back.

I lived in Vienna from 1938 to 1941 and then we were deported. I am not a friend of the Catholic Church bu the joining of HJ or Hitler Youth was a compulsory for every German shegez. The antisemitism of the Vatican is in the Curia

And he did attend a kabbalas shabbos at a frum shul in manhattan a few years back. I think the Igud HaRabbonim sent Rabbi Yehuda Levin instead, though
