New York, NY - The City Council is moving to reduce the amount of plastic that ends up in landfills.
City Council Speaker Christine Quinn plans to introduce a bill today that would require stores to recycle plastic bags.

The bill would require stores to provide bins for customers to drop off their used bags. and stores would have to label bags to specifically direct customers to recycle. "We're introducing legislation that we hope and really believe will address the huge problem of the number of plastic bags that New Yorkers are using everyday - and the fact that there is really no where to take them or nothing to do with them to get them to be recycled," says Quinn. What line am I in? I sell talleisim, tefillin, mezzuzois, etc. I have a website, but do not feel comfortable writing it, as folks would think I am just trying to get free publicity.

But, when I pack up something in a carton and need a cushioning space filler, I find these grocery bags work fine.

When stores started charging for plastic bags years ago over here, it took a while to get used to bringing your own re-usable bag, but now it works beautifully, plus top-notch foldable shopping baskets can easily carry up to 55lbs - try that with a plastic bag.

o. gevald is on the right track, because in most of the world the stores charge for plastic bags--they're a convenience to the customer but most bring their own reusable bags

Hey, send me all the used supermarket plastic bags you have.

I recycle them all the time. Instead of packing what I sell with Styrofoam peanuts, which are expensive and are bad for our environment, I pack the items with crunched up supermarket bags. They are very light, work fine, protect the environment by being recycled, and same my customers money. Hey, if I had to pay for those peanuts, I would need to charge more in shipping & handling.
I spend my money purchasing the best products I can find, and packing them as well as I can with a little money as possible. I also hate "disposable" packaging materials that will survive our grandchildren.

The amount of time these council members have on their hands to pass stupid and useless bill is mind boggling.
