Washington - Mitt Romney says his heart said he was going to win the presidency, but when early results came in on election night, he knew it was not to be.

The GOP nominee tells “Fox News Sunday” that he knew his campaign was in trouble when exit polls suggested a close race in Florida. Romney thought he’d win the state solidly.

Obama ended up taking Florida and won the election by a wide margin in the electoral vote.

Romney says there was “a slow recognition” at that time that President Barack Obama would win — and the race soon was over when Obama carried Ohio.

Romney says the loss hit hard and was emotional. Ann Romney says she cried.

The former Massachusetts governor acknowledges mistakes in the campaign and flaws in his candidacy.

But he jokes that he did better in his second run for the White House than he did the first time around — when he lost the 2008 nomination to Arizona Sen. John McCain.

He says he won’t get a third crack at it.

Romney says his campaign didn’t do a good job connecting with minority voters, and that Republicans must do a better job in appealing to African-Americans and Hispanics.

He says his campaign underestimated the appeal of Obama’s new health care law to low-income voters.

But he knows that because he lost the race, it’s hard to tell the GOP to listen now to what he has to say about how to improve the party’s message.

The Romneys are living in Southern California now and he’s kept a low profile since the election. He says “you move on” from the disappointment and that “I don’t spend my life looking back.”

Ann Romney says that after the election she was approached by TV’s “Dancing with the Stars,” but declined to join the cast.

She says she’ll be turning 64 soon and “I’m not really as flexible as I should be.”

The interview was taped Thursday and aired Sunday.

Romney did not run a very good campaign; if one looks at the ethnic composition of the various audiences at all of his campaign stops, with very rare exceptions, his supporters were all lilly white! Romney should have made a better effort to have reached out to minority voters. His campaign should have included stops in the urban and inner city areas. In 1980, even Ronald Reagan campaigned for President, in the South Bronx! Unfortunately, his pompous attitude cost him the election.

Republicans are toast!
Unless they figure out how to appeal to the other 47%, they will keep losing in greater and greater numbers.
The facts are, today's society comprises of a generation of freeloaders. They wont take work because then the government won't give them entitlements. Its a Catch 22 with no way out. Neither Party can resolve this! The result is Class War against the "Haves" vs. the "Have Nots". OWS is the birth pangs of this Class Warfare and more will come.

The Republicans are indeed toast - largely because, like you, they buy into the myth that their opponents are "supported by freeloaders".

Obama enjoyed overwhelming support of wealthy and upper middle class educated voters in the country's major urban economic centers - the opposite of freeloaders by any definition.

The GOP is far from even comprehendiing what this constantly swelling class of voters want, and as long as they continue to imagine that their opponents are largely the poor minorities, they will never craft a platform or a message that will ensure ongoing relevance.

Looking to the long term, I say good-bye and good riddance to what has become a backward-looking party. We do need multiple political parties in this country to prevent power from being concentrated in too few hands, but the Democrats opponents are likely to be, in the future, the Libertarians and perhaps a really progressive liberal party (Green Party if they can get their act together).

I guess that when you blaspheme democracy by touting you have an issue with the 47% and then you sneer at the US flag by writing your own name above the dignity of American interests by pursuing ignorant ideas such as increasing the number of navy ships in light of the evidence that America has no need for a steep escalation of these needs, you lose elections. Don't come back.

They are toast because they are liars and fakers. Yes the 46 % who don't pay taXes among them are persons who clean the OR, who remove bed pans from the patients. Of course the fianancial guru Mr. Ryan who intends to leave a skeleton lof Medicare cannot contradict Time magazine features an article "bitter pill"with gives figures of rampant price gauging of the patient and obscene profits by the CEO os hospital and durg manufact.. Mr. Romney was their herald and messenger and ready to implement all these lies.

How about the oil companies and other super corporations who not only pay no taxes on their obscene profits, but also receive government subsidies as well?

Evidently you don't know any urban educated voters if that's how you think they approach this.

Urban educated voters (I'm one of them) voted for Obama because the GOP offers a backward, racist, homophobic and xenophobic policy platform out of touch with our value system, an energy policy favoring big oil and highways over mass transit which utterly ignores what us urbanites need, and economic policies that favor welfare for already wealthy corporations when what we need is better and smarter support for our real entreupeners - scrappy urban startups run by all types including immigrants and those in the 99%.

Like Warren Buffet, me and those like me are willing to pay in a tiny bit more for a better society that gives us all better chances as opposed to further enriching those who already have everything they can possibly need and not much incentive to work their tails off to build something new.

And if that wasn't enough, those of us with a modicum of education have a healthy regard for facts, science and data. The GOP has transformed itself into a party that celebrates ignorance and imagination of reality, whether on global warming, economic policy, and it turns out, on political polling too.

They're not going to snag urban educated voters with that attitude, no matter what the NY Times says or doesn't say.

Good question. Charedi neighborhoods that are very dependent on government social service and transfer programs turned out in huge numbers for Romney even though his budget cuts would basically destroy them, while well-off modern orthodox neighborhoods voted in large numbers for Obama despite the fact that he promised to raise their taxes.

While I am modern orthodox and voted for obama i dont know of any coreligionists who shared my sympathies and voted my way--by and large I figure all conservative-minded voters opposed obama because of his democratic principles to support the underprivileged and minority groups. the republicans will never countenance supporting social security, medicare, minorities etc because these beliefs counter their desire to be clear and free of government and those who think government is beneficial to the individual

I agree with you and since the fine capitalist [named differently by Gingrich] includes those I mentions he should have kept his dumb motu shut. His wife had surgeries and suffers from incurable illness and must have encountererd those of the "46%" without whom her stay would habve been disastrous.

Just read the "bitter pill" article and with Medicare the ramant profiteering , and obscene gains from cancer, heart disease and other incurable ailments could be diminished.

Anne Romney is a class act - Mitt is a good man.

They are lucky to have each other and their beautiful family. In the end, that is all that matters in life. Do good, live with a Higher purpose, be giving. Have a circle of people you love, love you back. That is a blessed life.

Mitt and Anne did not make it to the top office, but they have top class, not like the many spiteful commentators here, who are probably damn jealous. I, for one, salute their grace, class and dignity. I wish them well and G-d's blessings.
