Washington - President Barack Obama marked Monday night’s start of Passover with a private Seder at the White House.

Obama started the tradition as a presidential candidate in 2008 when he joined Jewish staffers celebrating on the campaign trail. He’s continued it every year since with a small group of aides and friends. He told Israelis during a visit last week he wanted the tradition at the White House so his daughters could experience it.

This year, the first family planned to use a Seder plate Obama picked up on his visit. The plate was a gift to first lady Michelle Obama from Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s wife, Sara.

The Seder is the feast starting the Passover, when Jewish people celebrate liberation from slavery in ancient Egypt.

It seems to most of us that President Obama is doing his best in his own way for (political) 'kiruv' - but all that some people can do is to carp and to criticize anything and everything the president says, thinks or does.

Yes, regrettably, this country is made up of too many of those who cannot abide by an African American President in the White House. And, even more regrettable, a good number of these intolerant individuals are from the חרדי community, as can be seen from the posts appearing on this web site. In addition to their insane bigotry, they are also too cowardly to come out, and admit to what they truly are. Instead, they carp and criticize everything the President does. It's quite pathetic!

I am sure Obama means well but I think this crosses a boundary. A seder is meant for Jews. You can show respect in other ways. Now if Bibi had a Seder, that would be something!

Oh, how clever you must have thought you were when you typed that brilliant retort, proman #3!

As you know full well, none of those things ever happened (with the possible exception, of course, of horse radish as 'maror') but then again why let the facts get in the way of a good lie?

A word of advice, proman: don't give up what ever you day job might be as neither journalism nor public relations suit you in the very slightest.

The President IS wearing a yarmulka. Is he a descendant of a Marrano or a survivor of the 10 Lost Tribes?

He has a Seder every year, it's not new news or a new gimmick.

I am sorry that as a proud card carrying liberal you feel that any criticism of the anointed one is racially motivated, since liberals are completely 100% racist at heart. I would like to have you know that it makes NO difference to any of us what his skin color is as we wholeheartedly disagree with his policies. He could have skin like those one would see on StarTrek & it wouldn't make a blasted bit of a difference. As a leftist full of hate you don't get it, but that is true.

Why do you assume that one has to be a Leftist to be against racism?

The bottom line is we are required to have respect for our president whether or not we agree with his policies:

1) Mishna in avos.

2) He is democratically elected, not a dictator.

3) He is doing something for the sake of shalom.

4) Simple menschlachkeit requires it.

5) Mordechai fiercely defended Achashveirosh and was honored for it. (And Achashveirosh was no great friend of the Jews.)

6) Hakaras hatov for the wonderful freedoms we Jews enjoy here in the USA and always have. How blessed we are to live in such a wonderful country.

Yes, and equally regrettably, I had completely forgotten about that aspect of this story altogether.

Whichever way one looks at this story, public reaction - and it has to be *Jewish* public reaction because most American Gentiles are manifestly disinterested about tales of their president donning a "biretta" and sitting down to dinner with a crowd of court Jews one evening a year?

(BTW, is it still politically correct to describe a non-Jew as a “Gentile”, or has the "G-word" gone the way of the "N-word"? After all, "Gentile" is a word that first appears in early English translations of the New Testament as a translation for גוי, נכרי או ערל.)

And, as a card carrying conservative, you are aligned with the party that has used such 'dog whistles' as Gingrich's 'food stamp President' and that idiot woman Palin's 'Shuckin' and jivin,' not to mention voter suppression of minorities, Rand's refutation of the Civil Rights Bill, Santorum's statement that he 'doesn't want to make black peoples' lives better by giving them someone else's money,' that pathetic Sunnunu calling the President lazy and un-American, Perry's nostalgic memories of his parents' ranch 'Niggerhead,' and that moron Bachmann suggesting that blacks were better off under slavery, just to name a few examples. You and your loser party have been playing the race card ever since the elections of 2008, and have still not stopped, all the while assuring everyone that you are not a bunch of feral racists! Just as your party, the GOP/Baggers (KKK), you are too much of a coward to admit to being what you really are!

And, had the President used those 'other ways' to show respect for Jews, you'd be criticizing him right now for not having a Seder! Will you people ever learn that you're not sufficiently clever to fool anyone?

Why does the president make a seder anyway? Does he know how to conduct a seder? Do they read the Magid and eat all those kezaysim of matzo and morror before actually getting to the seuda? Or do they just dig in and have a feast without all the preliminaries? By the way,a yom tov table ought to have a white table cloth on it. If we would have the korban Pesach nowadays, he wouldn't be allowed to partake in it.

You accuse me of blind hatred, but you seem to practice blind love.
I have never and would never pouted that Obama did not have a Seder.

A Seder is a uniquely Jewish tradition. Goy shomer Shabbat is chayav mita. Why? Because there needs to be boundaries between them and us.

Because the narrative of a people in slavery gaining their freedom is universal and inspires people of all religions and cultures. Who cares how and what they do at their event?

The correct expression from סנהדרין נ"ח ע"ב is נכרי ששבת חייב מיתה. But, what has this to do with President Obama's Seder? He's not keeping שבת, and because you hate the President (and we all know why), you want to vilify him for everything, don't you? You people are so obvious in your psychotic hatred of the man!

I do not see the two girls there. That seems a shame as this would be a very nice bit of their education. Further, it looks like any "business" dinner at the White House, it would have been nice to have included family. Still, good on the President for this. I suppose it will be a White House custom for decades to come.

How many unfounded assumptions can one person make about someone who he very probably does not even know in one sentences. I will not bore you with the clchéd definition of *assume* is, as you - again, probably - have been told that at least a hundred times before.

it is very important that i keep my day job so i can fund all of this fools spending through my ever increasing tax burden. of course it was said in jest as i find the man to be a fake, look at all the wonderful things his "public relatons" camp produces: him riding a girls bicycle wth his helmet on backwards, him awkwardly holding a shotgun, so why WOULDNT I joke that he would not follow a tradition save for the fact of him saying he was doing it? Is it yours to argue or yours to determine how funny i am? The world is full or unamusing people who people may find amusing, have a look around at where ever it is that you are and see if that holds true.
