Yishai Eisenberg, a ninth grader at the Marsha Stern Talmudical Academy in Washington Heights, was one of two participants who so impressed contest judges that they unanimously declared a tie for the first time ever in Chidon history. Eisenberg shares his historic win with Beit Shemesh resident Elior Babian.

According to reports on Arutz Sheva, both Eisenberg and Babian were tied after facing the most difficult questions in the third round, presented to them by Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu. Each was posed a rapid fire series of twelve questions, to be answered in five seconds or less with no corrections allowed. After both teens received perfect scores in this round, judges elected to proclaim them joint winners.

Eisenberg was not the only area resident to score a coveted spot in this year’s International Chidon. Shalhevet Schwartz, a student at SAR High School in Riverdale, tied for fourth place in the competition.

The worldwide competition, which each year has contestants studying one sefer each from Torah, Neviim and Kesuvim, is now in its fiftieth year and took place Tuesday at the Jerusalem Theater. The contest was founded by Israel’s founding prime minister, David Ben Gurion, and is held each year on Yom Haatzmaut to symbolize the State of Israel’s unwavering commitment to the Torah.

The annual Chidon Hatanach begins each year with written regional competitions worldwide. In the United States, students who score above a certain level move on to the nationals, which are broken up into four divisions: Hebrew Middle School, English Middle School, Hebrew High School and English High School. The winner of each division goes on to represent the United States at the International Chidon Hatanach the following May in Israel.

Yishai and his two sisters Yael and Shalva all participated in the Chidon and Eisenberg’s former elementary school principal at Yeshiva Beis Hillel of Passaic praised the Eisenbergs for their commitment to Tanach.

“Mr. Eisenberg comes to school to study with his kids for the Chidon and he always finds a way to work within the framework of the school schedule,” Rabbi Berel Leiner told VIN News. “I see them in the board room studying and he coaches other students as well. The Eisenberg children are privileged to come from a family where Torah study is primary and they are an inspiration to us all.”

Rabbi Leiner recalled that confusion reigned when Yishai received a perfect score in one of the preliminary rounds last year.

“The computer totaled his score and it came to one hundred percent,” recalled Rabbi Leiner. “They thought that maybe there was something wrong, or maybe they had accidentally scanned the answer key instead of Yishai’s answers. I think he may have been the first kid ever to get a perfect score.”

Yael Eisenberg, a student at Bruriah High School placed second in the Hebrew High School division in last year’s nationals and another Passaic resident Elisheva Friedman, a student at Yeshiva Ketana of Passaic, took second place in the Hebrew Middle School division.

Rabbi Leiner had high hopes for Yishai after his stellar performance in last year’s earlier rounds.

“I was expecting Yishai to do well and I was almost expecting him to win because he kept advancing from one level to the next,” said Rabbi Leiner. “I can’t say I was shocked to see him win, but I will say it was a very pleasant surprise.”

I don’t know why our Yeshivos, totally ignore Tenaach. We grow up not knowing anything about how our previous Kings, Malchei Yehuda and Malchei Yisroel, spent their days. I am sure that there is so much to learn from their every activity in Torah and Mitzvos.
Especially the details of Mitzvos that they did relating to Zeroiem, Kodshim, and Tumah V’ta’hara. We no longer have these Mitzvos today; but they were busy with these Mitzvos plus regular Mitzvos at least 80% of their day. So lets open up a Tenaach and learn.

It is worth watching the YouTube video to see the final rounds of the Chidon. The Chareidi world needs to realize that we are so much closer to our less religious brothers and sisters in Israel. They too love Torah and the Mesorah. If we stop judging based on clothing and skirt lengths we can achieve true Achdus. As far as those who feel that Yidishkeit is really all about appearances and skirt lengths……stay tuned. We often get to see impressive looking rabbis here on VIN. I am sure before long there will be yet another Frum looking scoundrel out of monsey or Brooklyn.

Nice, yasher koach to the winners.

I don’t get why it was necessary to ruin it by having kol isha, with a woman leading the singing of Hatkivah, afterward though.

Anyone who is really interested in the future of the Jewish People should be thrilled that the prime minister is interested in Tanach. Don’t be so quick to call a YU student “less religious” he has made a “kiddish Hashem” halevy everyone who is reported in the paper does the same.

I can’t believe that frum observant (at least I believe so) Jews would write this way!
The purpose of Torah learning should be solely be to do ‘RZON HASHEM’ Torah should not be used as a competition! We do respect an individual who reached a certain level of Torah as ‘KVOD HATORAH’.
The Torah should make a person be better, behave better. The Torah gave us guidelines which will NEVER change, of course certain ‘haloches’ might be controversial like what ‘length of skirts is permitted’ but still we have to follow guidelines of the Rabonim! Now, a male should under no circumstances hear a female singer (even thru a microphone) (regardless if he gets aroused by it or not), as that’s shameless commenter said!!
    Bottom line:
Purpose of Torah should be as we praise everyday ‘ללמוד וללמד לשמר ולעשות ולקיים׳
I beg Hashemite he should help all our fellow brothers to do ‘tshuvah shleima’

To the contrary, the gemara says that the one thing one is permitted to envy is another’s Torah knowledge, because it will encourage you to improve yours! Congrats to these two amazing American Jews!

When I was in yeshiva we learned neviim in fourth grade. Then fifth grade we started Bava Metzia and presto, no more Nach. I personally don’t understand how you can learn anything else without the foundation of the neviim.

And my father told me a story once. He was in beis medrash, sitting there with a nach open in front of him, and one of the mashgichim wandered past and looked at what he was learning. The mashgiach started shouting “What are you doing! You’re supposed to be learning gemora! It’s bittul Toyre!” My father looked at him like he was nuts.

In yemos hamosiach, those on top will be on the bottom. It refers to all those that think their way is the only way that Hashem likes.
