Brooklyn, NY - Flatbush Shomrim Assists NYPD In Chinese "Blessing Scam"
Brooklyn, NY - Flatbush Shomrim has teamed up with the NYPD and its Chinese neighbors to combat the newly-arrived Chinese “Blessing Scam” that is targeting local, elderly Chinese residents.
According to the DAILY NEWS (http://nydn.us/YKvs2m), the scam is being run by groups of 3-10, and sends spotters in to coffee shops and places where elderly Chinese gather to eavesdrop on conversations about their problems, families, etc.
Smooth-talking crooks dressed like monks soon follow, claiming to have “special powers,” which, for a price, they will use to cure ills.
Those refusing to pay are threatened with a curse on their family.
Since crooks are targeting an ethnic group typically known for refraining from reporting crimes to authorities, the NYPD has reached out to the Jewish community, which has experienced similar problems in the past.
Chaim Deutsch, who heads the Flatbush Shomrim, said he has reached out to Brooklyn DA Charles Hynes for help in the matter before it spreads to other communities and becomes an “epidemic.”
