Montreal, Canada - Rejecting the most recent complaint by a neighborhood watchdog group in a case that dates back decades, a Quebec Superior Court Justice has ruled that Congregation Munchas Elozer Munkas can continue “activities of worship and religion.”

The NATIONAL POST (http://bit.ly/14RKXNY) is reporting that in his ruling, Judge Andre Prevost said that city has been aware of the synagogue’s existence since at least 1980, and that few of the 200 people who signed the complaint lived close enough to be negatively affected by its presence.

At issue in the controversy that goes back decades, is an admitted zoning violation that places half of the building in which the synagogue is housed on a street zoned exclusively for residential housing.

Through the years, repeated attempts to shut the synagogue down have failed, and by-and-large, members of the 35 family congregation and locals have co-existed peacefully.

This latest complaint came on the heels of a hotly-contested debate over “reasonable accommodation of religious minorities,” which saw a local YMCA consent to frosted windows so that boys attending a local Hasidic school would not have to view women exercising in spandex.

An increasingly rare case when a frenchman, especially a quebecois, is not as antisemitic as his peers. Credit to Andre Prevost who undoubtedly had to withstand a lot of pressure from other quebecois, starting with his own family, who counted on him to rule against Jews.
