Far Rockaway, NY - A 20 year old man visiting friends in Far Rockaway was subjected to a vicious beating when he stepped outside for a few minutes to take a phone call.

Security footage from a neighbor’s video surveillance camera show the man in a white shirt walking down Channing Road near Beach 9th Street when three youths who came up from behind began punching him.  The victim ran out into the street in front of 990 Channing Road,  calling for help, where he was thrown to the ground and kicked repeatedly before the attackers ran away.  Two other youths, who appear to be with the attackers, stood hovering several yards down the street during the eighteen second attack.

The NYPD, Rockaway Citizens Safety Patrol and Hatzalah were all called after the incident and the victim, who received facial injuries, was transported by Hatzalah to Saint John’s Episcopal Hospital and later released.

In an interview with VIN News, a police spokesman at DCPI has confirmed the details of the attack which is being considered a robbery, not a hate crime.  The victims white 16GB iPhone 5 was taken during the attack.

The Rockaway Citizens Safety Patrol is issuing an alert to all area residents, urging them as always to use extreme caution at all times.  The volunteer citizens patrol has been reviewing the security footage, which has been turned over to the authorities.

“We have a pretty good idea of who they are and we are working with the NYPD,”  Jason Shtundel, coordinator of the RCSP told VIN News.  “We hope that they will be making an arrest in this case soon.”

Look at how he is so absorbed in his phone call that he is unaware of the three obvious hoodlums stalking him from behind. You can't be so caught up in your own world that you aren't aware of your surroundings. These hoodlums take advantage of surprise. If he had looked up and down the block and seen them coming, this would never have happened.

Do you look up and down your street multiple times while outside your own home? How would you know they are hoodlums? Is there a flashing red light on their shirts? Far Rockaway is a very diverse neighborhood, so unless your racist you don't assume anything!

What an insensitive and heartless comment. That's the only thing you could muster up? How addicted he is to the phone? In fact, he would've been beaten regardless, these people were looking for trouble. Talking on the phone was the thing that saved him because he never saw it coming so didn't brace the hits with his head or face, which could've caused a concussion. Shame this is the lessn you glean. I find it nice that he is giving the person on the other line full attention, - characteristic many people lack right now.

Why is it being considered a robbery if it does not appear like they took anything?

Riiiiiiiight!! Because you ALWAYS pay more attention to your surroundings than your phone call.

Tell it to people who will believe your shtussim!!

Your comment is repulsive. Sure blame the victim. Seriously are you mr perfect that scans out every area before walking. This person did the very logical thing of taking his phone call outside especially if it was a private call. I mean it looks like it was in broad day light!!! Unfortunately their are sick savages amongst us and in particular areas. It would be prudent to never take out your phone or anything of value when traveling to these 'jungle' areas.

Of course you totally missed the point of the story; which is the crime in Far Rockaway which must be stopped by the police, and once these thugs are caught they should be put away for a good few years and it should be publicized so that the other scumbags get the message which is you do the crime you gonna pay.

The recent spikes in street robberies are because of Iphone and Ipod thefts so clearly one should display these when walking down the street. Unfortunatly, not all our neighbors are honest upstanding citizens.

pc is lovely and all that but the reality is that more violent crimes are committed by blacks then whites, per capita. that is the official statistic. even jesse jackson ,who didn't know he was being recorded, said he was afraid when he saw black teenagers walking toward him on the street.

Welcome to Demo-rat hell. I don't believe this is just a "spike" in street robberies. Hordes of third world criminals are allowed to invade our borders, black power flash mobs run wild attacking whites all over the country, and law abiding citizens are strictly forbidden from carrying firearms in violation of their 2nd amendment rights.

Police and government are the cause of this problem, not the cure. The only cure is concealed carry for all law abiding citizens.

C'mon Charlie, bring out the "R" word and defend the black racists.

The Far Rockaway Community would have a much safer and stronger security patrol if it wasnt for the few "askanim" THAT ARE NOT ALLOWING the local shomrim from getting the funding and attention it needs in order for it to function properly.

If you would read a little further you would notice where it says "The victims (should be victim's) white 16GB iPhone 5 was taken during the attack."

Was that a joke? It really wasn't funny.
It was nice of you to ask about the victim, though.

Of course, we all wish the victim a rfuah shleima and that the cops should catch these lowlives and also recover his iPhone.

Oy gevald! Here we just attended a levaiah for 12 Sifrei Torah and now our community gets another zetz! Why is Hashem sending these wild beasts into our midst?! What did we do that we were first slapped directly by Hashem with Sandy and then by these Chayei Raah? We are good people to each other here in our community. Why should we be afflicted like this?

To #22- Your statement is wrong. There were three Yidden shot dead in a bank in Beersheba, by an Israeli Jew last week, because the assailant was angry at the bank. There was an American-Israeli, aged 60, who was knifed to death in Jerusalem, by some Israeli hoodlums, because he didn't give them cigarettes. There have been other heinous crimes in EY, against Yidden. Therefore, don't be lecturing us how much "safer" it is in EY, than in the USA. Incidentally, without having seen the video of the attack, the hoodlums who attacked and beat the victim, are nothing but savages from the jungle! Even in Baghdad, Iraq, and Kabul, Afghanistan, an incident such as this does not occur. They don't have hoodlums, who will target any individual, and beat him senseless, for a few dollars (or their equivalent of a few dollars).

25000 people died in EY since 1948 far more than the whole world combined, here is your SAFE EY.

I do. I am constantly alert when on the street, taking the subways or LIRR. Stop, look, and listen was great to teach kids about crossing streets- why don't we do it too? Look around you, look for people following you, look for suspicious behavior or items (be anti-terror at the same time!). Look behind you! Listen for footsteps after dark. I could go on. It takes a extra couple of minutes but is great, especially as someone who was mugged in the past. You don't want it to happen to you.
I am not being racist, but there are certain areas where I am extra vigilant. I wont pull out my ancient phone, i will check to see if my bag is zippered before going out there and will hold onto the bag tighter. But I am vigilant everywhere- I look out the peephole of my front door before opening, I look to see if someone is hiding behind cars parked on MY block.

It actually looks like the video was taken after the fact by the RCSP as you can hear from their radios in the background. Obviously, if this was being viewed at the time I'm sure the patrol would have jumped into action. I feel a lot more secure knowing we have a patrol. I was told by one of their members that an arrest is imminent.

How dare you say that this is the reason that he got attacked??? You have no idea why he got attacked! You don't know what was going on in those people's minds. Don't you ever say something like that. You DO NOT have ruach hakoesh!! You have no right to say any such thing!
