South Williamsburg, NY – In an effort to address the misconception that all Hasidics are against the new Citi Bike shared-bike program, a Hasidic pro-bike group from Williamsburg is starting an online petition aimed at hopefully bringing kiosks into what has come to be known as the “Black Hat Black Hole” section of Williamsburg.

The JEWISH DAILY FORWARD (http://bit.ly/11NLyOK) reports that Hasidim for Bikes, which was formed in May, says the media is partially to blame for the “misconception” that all Hasidics are anti-bike by publicizing the rantings of a few “extreme” local leaders, and claim they are speaking for the “silent” majority of Hasidics who would welcome the program.
A spokesman for Hasidim for Bikes, local Jewish businessman and former bike shop owner, Baruch Herzfeld, said it is but a few “hotheads” who do all the “complaining” and that community would “love” to be included.
A DOT representative said the current Citi Bike blueprint reflects the level of neighborhood “input,” but that the DOT continues to welcome proposals from neighborhoods for inclusion.
too little too late
It’s easy for someone to call yourself a silent majority.
Just proof it.
I can’t wait to see the battle over this one. Maybe they’ll draft Chassidim to ride bikes.
Ha!! Boruch Hertzfeld represents Hassidim, thats a new one.
For the record there is already a kiosk in the Hasidic neighborhood, on Bedford corner South 9th Street.
On your mark, get set, the next asifah featuring bicycles and the inherent danger to our spirituality. We need Moshiach now to save us from the zealots – zadukim of today.
This is a lie, I’m all for bikes, but the community is against it, even this minority which sometimes bikes on the outskirts of williamsburg, would feel uncomfterable to grab their bike in middle of williamsburg, and there are atleast 3 locations around williamsburg:
1) in front of signature bank
2) Next to home depot
3) Franklin co. Park.
So what does burech want??
In front of rodney shul??
If you go to Belgium you’ll see that all Chasidim, young and old, are on bikes. Nothing wrong with that. Time to bring it here to America.
You’ll have nothing to lose…. except that big stomach of yours!
Anyone can form a group and send out press releases. I now head the group “Misnagdim against bikes in Brooklyn”. Our committee is in formation and we’ll set forth our proposal next month. I claim that we have 2500 followers.
Some sanity in a neighborhood not known for it!
There are many heimeshe yidden in willy who have been strong supporters of biking and have encouraged the tzibur to use bikes for local trips to shul, market, yeshiva and mikvah. It reduces noise, pollution and congestion in addition to the obvious fitness benefits. I don’t understand why we don’t see a groundswell of demand to expand the bike rental program all over willy, bp and flatbush. We need more rabbonim to come out and take the lead on this issue.
How foolish of people to fall time and again to
People of the bloomberg rejeem

Why does anyone need rabbonim to tell you it’s ok to ride a bike?
Is there anything indemnifying the taxpayers from injury lawsuits in event of accidents?
