Nassau County, NY – Popular Bakery Refutes Claims Of Pest Problems, Calling It Past History

Nassau County, NY – Their challahs, rye breads and Meltaway cakes have been the talk of the town for years, but an article published today on a local blog has made a well known Five Towns bakery a topic of conversation for a completely different reason.

According to report on FiveTownsPatch.com, Zomick’s Bakery has been plagued by recurring pest problems and has failed ten out of seventeen New York State Department of Agriculture inspections since 2005. Zomick’s passed its most recent inspection on February 28, 2013.

Violations found at the Inwood facility over the past eight years have included the presence of cockroaches, beetles, flies, mice, birds and rodent droppings. While at one point Zomick’s did fail three consecutive inspections, for violations including “live birds noted flying over the baking area” to bags of flour “found to be rodent defiled with mouse droppings and gnaw marks,” the bakery has never lost its license because state regulations state that the criteria for having a license revoked is four consecutive failures.

A spokesperson for Zomick’s, whose products sell both in kosher markets as well as chain stores including Whole Foods and Fairway, acknowledged that there had been difficulties with violations in the past.

“There were problems, they were dealt with and we haven’t had any issues since then,” Nat, a manager at the bakery, told VIN News. “Anyone who walks into our plant now can see that it is very, very clean.”

In order to ensure the cleanliness of the facility, Zomick’s voluntarily brought in inspectors from the NSF (National Sanitation Foundation), a not for profit organization that describes itself as an accredited third party certification entity that tests for public health and safety standards.

“We passed that inspection on June 13, 2012,” said Nat. “We did have one inspection, as reported in the Patch article, where the inspector found beetles in a sack of cornmeal. In his report, the inspector states that the delivery came in while he was here and when we opened up the sealed bag, we saw there were beetles inside. We sent the entire bag away and had it burned.”

Nat refuted the idea that Zomick’s continued to be plagued by pest problems, as suggested by the article in the Five Towns Patch.

“It’s not true,” reported Nat. “It’s just not true.”

Zomick’s next Department of Agriculture inspection is scheduled for August 2013.

I am a frequent visitor at the bakery and have never seen anything described in this article at all. On the contrary the bakery is very well kept, the place is thoroughly cleaned daily, workers wear the hair nets and gloves at all times, and there was never a sign of any birds or mice. It should also be noted that the bakery is newly renovated due to damages from Sandy so the conditions described in this article are totally out of line. It appears that this article comes from someone that is out to hurt them.

The problem I have with Zomick’s is with rapid mold. For some reason, when I buy a loaf of Zomick’s rye bread, it becomes moldy within 3 days or so.

This article looks plain like someone that has something personal with the boss or manager… and this is a good way how to fix him up.. but the story doesn’t look true at all and especially when it’s one of the most beautiful warehouse bakery in the world..

hhmmm. Something strange. Someone is really out to get them. I’ve been buying their products for years now, my parents too. We have not had any real issues with their products. If the bread or chala is bagged too soon after baking it can get moldy from the moisture in the bag but we have not had that issue.
If all that written stuff was true… I would have seen something in my baked goods over the years. I have never ever seen anything in their product.
My friend who has visited their factory was very impressed with how clean it was, very spacious not cluttered bakery like old bakeries. Hi tech machines…
I know I’m still buying my Fresh Chala tomorrow. I’m sure this will pass like any other rumor.
When will our fellow jews stop trying to hurt other jews.
p.s. you must try their Mandel bread. By far the best in NY. It’s my kids favorite. Addictive.

Really, 5TResident? My problem is just the opposite. What do they add to the challah that makes it look, feel and taste exactly the same 2 weeks later?
As an aside, maybe we found the reason why the challah is neon yellow!

    Absolutely False!!!
I am a steady Customer since I have a Famous Coffee Shop and I am Very picky in what I sell to My very special customers I Never Encountered any of those allegations!! I don’t understand How a Bakery like zomics who has over hundred work personal round the clock could exist one day even if its half true , We all know that inspectors walk in to a restaurant if they find droppings they will assign you a BIG “C” with no mercy at all and in some cases close you up completely!! Secondly, I know for a fact they are selling to Huge Chain Stores witch have their own Stringent rules and Conduct there own Inspections, and Thirdly, All the workers (And Guests) Must wear complete coverings men must also cover thire beards and women thire Hair So with all this said and done I could just Add one think, “” Ve’yochli Anuvim V’yisboi “” and who ever did try to damage there reputation Have in mind “Al D’atfaich A’tfichu (After all Some one is in charge of this universe if u havnt proven it yet u will one day) Enjoy Zomics

Too many family members posting here for anything to be credible. The state has cited them from the very beginning, so give it up. With Shabbos approaching, we need to tell the truth and not have family members or workers post lies. Lives could be endangered. Is that ok with you?

These inspectors are hard working and do not lie. They need their jobs and too many of them have been involved with the inspections. The bakery has admitted they had problems and have cleaned it up. In the meantime, stop trying to protect by telling lies. It’s like the lies told to protect an abuser. STOP

It hurts me to see what is happening in chodesh av.
There is no way anyone badmouthing a company like this in public is doing this l’shem any mitzva.
The fact that they have past the last few inspections (or more, I’m just quoting the article) means that they have shaped up (if there was ever any real problem). I happen to think that if there was ever a reason they failed inspection it was due to the regular pests issues that food industries are always battling. Don’t think for a second that there is a food facility that is pest free. No matter how much you try, you still receive product from outside companies that may have issues. That’s why you hire a pest control company that does weekly checkups. people, let’s be real here. I’m not sure what any yid is trying to do erev tisha b’av just to hurt another jew’s parnasa. If you say that he refuses to listen to authority …. then maybe you could say let’s publicize. But that is definitely not the case here.
Anyone who knows that bakery knows that they are honest people (not trying to cut corners). So lets do the right thing and stop this terrible article and hope for a yeshua for klal yisroel.
