The gatherings Saturday night ranged from a few dozen to a couple hundred people turning out to protest the verdict in the Florida courtroom over the death of Trayvon Martin, and police said some of the demonstrations continued into the early hours Sunday.

The Oakland police dispatch office said about 100 people protested, with some in the crowd breaking windows on businesses and starting small fires in the streets. As the protest wound down with the crowd dispersing, the office said that as of 2 a.m. PDT it had no word of any arrests.

Local media reports said some Oakland marchers vandalized a police squad car and police formed a line to block the protesters’ path.

The Oakland Tribune said some windows on the newspaper’s downtown offices were broken, and footage from a television helicopter show people attempting to start fires in the street and spray painting anti-police graffiti.

Protesters also reportedly burned an American and a California state flag and spray painted Alameda County’s Davidson courthouse.

The Oakland demonstration followed a raucous but largely peaceful one in San Francisco. Police say officers escorted demonstrators as they marched on the city’s Mission District. The group was dispersed by 10 p.m.

The verdict also sparked protests in Los Angeles, where demonstrators gathered in Leimert Park, the city’s historically black neighborhood.

Police said that about 200 protesters gathered for what they termed a peaceful vigil.

City News Service said that at one point a smaller group stopped an Expo Line train as police urged them to return to the nearby park. But police couldn’t immediately confirm that report.

Lt. Andy Neiman of the LAPD Media Relations Department said another group of 50 to 100 demonstrators started marching around midnight.

“There was a period where crowds were running among vehicles, but police dissuaded them,” he said.

Neiman said he knew of no arrests.

Officials said police called in officers from around the city to keep a watch on demonstrators.

More than 40 people gathered at Sacramento City Hall, and the Sacramento Bee reported that protesters chanted: “What do we want? Justice. When do you we want it? Now. For who? Trayvon.”

A banner behind speakers read, “No justice, no peace!”

Even though the blacks are not as radical like in the sixties they use that historical image as a threat to governments. No government wants its cities burnt down so they will allow a federal trial to go forth on the zimmerman case. We chareidim should learn from the black activists. We can stop the draft of yeshiva boys as well as get funding if we utilize passed images of large rallies. We can utilize the pictures of large rallies of the past of orthodox jews protesting against secular laws in israel as well. Everything is perception. If politician believe we are a force to reckon with they will fold like cheap cameras. There would never be a black in the white house if they acted like the modern orthodox apologetic leaders who cow tow jewish values. You need to speak up and protest like our leaders did on issues of shabbos, forced autopsies, in the not so long distant past. People like rabbi Amrom Blau, chazon ish,Satmar rebbe and others led the way. Today we have far more dangerous issues from gay parades, drafting yeshiva boys to destroying yeshiva education by forcing secular subjects to be thought. Learn from the black activist and we can turn israel into a complete frum society. Keep fighting with no compromises.

Of course they’re rioting, but when hundreds of 17 year old black youths are killed by gang violence no one says a word. It’s unfortunate that Treyvon was killed, but based on the testimony; Zimmerman didn’t violently gun him down as some people would like you to believe. Ethically, Zimmerman committed a terrible crime however legally he was justified.

We could either wish them well as they kill each other (since that doesn’t seem to bother OblamO, sharpton etc) or, like the mayor of Chicago in the 60s, order the cops to shoot to kill.

I’ve never seen white riots when a court case was lost. Maybe it’s because they are too busy tending to their family and jobs.

The openly racist comments (“they”, “their” “black in the White House”) are uncalled for, display a lack of intelligence, and do us a great disservice. When someone from our community does something wrong and people paint us with a broad brush then we are all up in arms.

Strange that when a Black is aquitted of killing a Black there is no protest. Most of the young Black men killed in this country are killed by other Blacks. The news media should never given this local Florida shooting such coverage.

They are right. All illegal protesters should get arrested and convicted to the max of the law. This is a country that has laws written in the book and it should apply firmly on the ones that violate them, and specially no mercy for instigators.

Pepper spray the rioters (peaceful demonstrations without any fires or vandalism are ) and arrest them all! What if it was your shop they broke into, your car windows that were smashed??

I believe that what happened to trayvon was terrible and had Zimmerman listened to the suggestion of the dispatcher and let the cops take care of things, none of this would have occurred. but, mr Sharpton, justice was done according to the laws of the land. if you don’t like the laws, there are political and legal ways of changing them. rallying/rioting is not justice

    I’m tired of hearing from
those on this site who constantly berate Zimmerman for following Trayvon Martin. It is not illegal to follow someone, and ask them what they are doing in a given area. All Trayvon Martin had to do was tell Zimmerman that he was staying in the complex with his Father. Instead, Martin chose to attack Zimmerman, and wouldn’t stop when asked to do so, by a witness. Where I used to live (gated communities), I was asked by security, as well as a resident who I was. I didn’t go around attacking those who asked me those questions. Also, let us stop portraying Trayvon Martin as some “child” choir or altar boy. He was nearly six feet tall, and muscular. In addition, he had trained in mixed martial arts. There is no doubt that he would have either killed George Zimmerman by bashing his head into the concrete, or left him in a permanent vegetative state. I remember that during the Harlem Riots of 1964, some gentleman was also throwing some objects from the roof of an apartment building onto the cops. When he refused to stop doing that, they had no choice, but to shoot and kill him. Case closed!
