Israel - Shas’s Council of Torah Sages member Rabbi Shalom Cohen in a sermon Saturday made degrading remarks against the religious Zionist sector by questioning their Jewishness and referring to them as “Amalek” - a biblical tribe hostile to the ancient Israelites.

Cohen, dean of the Porat Yosef Yeshiva, was seen in a video on the haredi website Kikar Hashabat as saying, “the Throne [of God] is not complete as long as there are Amalek, ..when will the Throne be complete? When there are no more [religious Zionists].”

Bayit Yehudi Chairman and Religious Services Minister Naftali Bennett on Sunday blasted Cohen for his remarks.

Bennett called on Shas spiritual leader Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, who was seated next to Cohen during the sermon, to condemn the “incitement campaign against the [religious Zionists] before it is too late”.

“At this time, thousands of [religious Zionists] can be found from the Syrian border to the Egyptian border, from the highest level of command [in the army] to the last soldier, spilling their blood to defend [the country], and the honor of the rabbi.”

It used to be that a Rav could disagree or condemn something without calling it "Amalek " or "Nazi". Even Bavel and Rome are typically differentiated from Amalek notwithstanding that we are about to mourn the two Temples that they destroyed.

Maybe they can make a list of what isn't Amalek and who isn't a Nazi. Also, if he is advocating the murder of religious Zionists, does that make him a Rodef?

There is no Loshon Hurah when bashing Reshuim, if you don't believe that they are Reshuim than it's an ideological difference, not a Loshon Hurah issue.

The Chufetz Chaim clearly writes that you're allowed to decade the evil part of Reshuim, if your goal is that people should refrain for them. (I don't believe winning a political contest is included in this Hetar)

The chilonim have to know that it is at best a few thousand biryonim who behave this way and hundreds of thousands of frum Yidden abhorr these methods- but the Chareidi Gedolim must come out in one decisive voice against this

How about looking at it a different way. The fact that their is a budget to cut, demonstrates that those that pay the taxes have been supporting Yeshiva's and Torah learning since the State was reborn. The secular governments have done more to help Yeshiva's than those spouting Sinas Chinum and those attacking soldiers who fight for them.

Even the IDF suffered with big time cuts. Trying to solve a budget mess isn't being done on the backs of Chareidim. Everyone is being affected. Suck it up, raise funds yourself and appreciate the level of help that has been given for 65 years. Yeshiva's are still getting funding, just not as much. Maybe if Shas, as others like them would stop the graft, there would be more money.

If there is so much time to demonstrate and to attack soldiers, there is time to work and pay taxes. They aren't learning anything and their actions prove it.

By saying that the chilonim are tinok shenishba you are saying that Israel is a non Jewish country and evrybody who lives there is a goy.

Please note the wording תינוק שנשבה לבין העכו"ם וגדל והוא אינו יודע מה הם ישראל ולא דתם

Regarding the chillonim status as tinok shenishba- you do know that the chazon ish said this. Right? Unfortunately growing up today in Israel may give someone a more warped view of what Yahadus is than if he grew up bein hakum mamash. Vehamaven yuvin.

The more I think about this statement (if G-d forbid it is accurate), the more depressed I get. Eruv Tisha B'Av, it is K'Halacha to say that well intentioned Jews who keep Shabbos, Tefila, Kashrus, Tzedakah, Taharus, Lemud Torah, Gemilas Chasadim and hundreds of other mitzvos are Amalek? People who are moser nefesh for the klal not only themselves but their children?

The part that is hardest to accept is that there does not seem to be any way to change opinions and that the majority of "Religious" Jews seem heading in this direction. Would another Churban, G-d forbid a million times, be needed for all to understand that this is Sinas Chinum and needs to be corrected?

Disgusting hypocrisy during Nine Days. The vast majority of Charedim are lovely kind people who should be embarrassed by this "gadol".

Any Jew, especially a respected rabbi, who makes a public proclamation describing fellow Jews as Amalek, has sunk below the bar in every way - intellectually, in integrity, in decency, in lomdus, in ahavas Yisrael, in perspective, in kedusha. We desperatly need Mashiach, before we sink to the lowest rung of the 49 rungs of tumah brought about by Sinas Chinam, of baseless hatred beyond the pale of redemption,

I know Rabbi Cohen well. He is a gentle peace loving man who appreciates every Yid as if he were a son. However he is a man who only ever speaks the truth . Bennett you and your like are trying to destroy the Torah yishuv in Eretz Yisroel. Clearly hearing the truth hurts you.

This foolish "Rabbi" is saying that thousands of his fellow Jews deserve to be annihilated.

Gentle and peace loving indeed...

The fact is the MO as well as so called religious zionists are watered down judaism. They r brainwashed by the secular world and are not the real future of Torah Judaism. All gedolim are from chassidic or yeshivash camps not the knitted kipas crowd. Why?

Reb Friedman,

Let's say you are right, so for Mosheach to come, you need to get the other Jews to join your view.

1. Will physically attacking Chayalim and verbally attacking MO Jews bring your goal any closer?
2. Even if somehow it would, where in Halacha are you permitted to attack or dishonor another yid?
3. Even if you are permitted to do so to stop them from doing "averos", do you really believe that these attacks will change their mind?
4. Finally, are you so sure in the correctness of your cause that you are willing to risk committing the most serious possible averos to defend your derech? Isn't it possible that the Av Harachmim is not pleased with this? This week in Chazon Yeshaiyahu, he said G-d does not want any more tefilos from people without mercy.

Reading these stories and postings has been one of the most depressing days I have ever had. I hope to continue to teach my family that 5 of the Aseres Hadibros are Bein Adom L'M-kom and 5 are Bein Adam LÇhavero.

You may be right that they aren't the future of Torah Judaism, but that's because you're referring to the Charedi Torah, which was given to Charedim a mere 150 or so years ago. The rest of us Jews are sticking with Torah M'Sinai, if that's OK with you.

I would rather be a Proud self supporting MO, then a brainwashed, hateful, on the dole person like you.

and? The fact is that many don't know or understand because they were not taught anything. The secular leftists designed things that way, and the Frum are setting a poor example, so why should they gravitate to Torah when they see such behavior from "Torah" Jews. They are also not taught our connection to the land, that many think we took it from the Arabs. They do qualify as tinokim.

You and your "Gedolim" are showing how small you really are.

Can you truly believe that people deserve to be wiped out because they wear a kippa made from thick string and not thin string???
