New York, NY - Decades-old affiliations with anti-Semitic groups are raising questions for Democratic mayoral candidate Bill de Blasio, most notably his time spent in Nicaragua in 1988, where the Sandinista-controlled government openly persecuted Jews.

The NEW YORK POST (http://bit.ly/1bamuTP) reports that Jewish leaders say that Nicaragua’s tiny Jewish population of about 250 was constantly threatened by the repressive Sandinista regime, which confiscated private Jewish property, while openly supporting Yasser Arafat’s PLO.

Persecution and the threat of imprisonment caused many Jews to flee the country.

According to records, de Balsio arrived in Nicaragua at the age of 26, in a humanitarian capacity to help distribute food and medicine.

On the subject, de Blasio said recently, “They had a youthful energy and idealism mixed with a human ability and practicality that was really inspirational.”

Campaign spokesman Dan Levitan said there was “no connection” between de Blasio’s humanitarian efforts and the anti-Semitism practiced by the Sandinistas.

This pathetic effort to "raise questions" about prior associations is reminiscent of similar efforts to smear President Obama during the election campaign. It didn't work then and won't work now, except to show that the slime who circulate these stories for what they are.

Mr. Wilhelm (German papa perhaps?) Needs to explain his wide support for that regime that reminded all Yidden of Germany's 3rd reich.

DeBlasio has no convictions at all...whenever he takes a "stand" go on line and check who last made a sizable donation to his campaign.

So you're not denying the reports. You're just stating the obvious, that most voters don't care if someone was connected to anti-Semites.

This city needs to recalibrate her priorities. The issue this election is not who has the most interracial family; it is who can run the city and keep the crime low, attract business, and avoid strikes.

DeBlasio is a Sandinista communist who is pledged to end stop and frisk and return to the failed Dinkin days.

You are one troubled yid if you will make your decision on a mayoral candidate on the basis of MPB or any other single litmus test. Some conservatives say we should give IQ tests to new citizens before we allow them to vote. Perhaps we should start with existing voters like "Watcher".

it didn't work then because of the liberal media's adulation of and double standard for obama. wright is a virulent anti semite and anti american and obama was closely associated with him for 20 years. calling others slime doesn't erase wright's documented history.

You have no idea what you are talking about. The Sandinistas were not Communist -- the Communist Party of Nicaragua was in opposition to the Sandinistas the entire 1980s!

And while the Jewish community was persecuted, so were non-Jewish businessmen. The *Post* has presented absolutely no evidence that Jews were singled out.

I write as someone who can't stand Daniel Ortega. His public record is sufficient to condemn him without playing the Jewish card.
