HAARETZ (http://bit.ly/173CS4F) reports that Schaps currently holds the distinction of being the only female Haredi professor in Israel, and possibly the world.
Schaps currently resides in Bnei Brak with her husband David, a classical studies professor at Bar Ilan, and their children.
Schaps was born in the U.S., and changed her name from Mary Elizabeth Cramer after she converted to Judaism before marrying David in 1986.
Schaps is a mathematician, as we as a best-selling author who writes under the name Rachel Pomerantz for a large, mostly female, American ultra-Orthodox audience.
“HAARETZ reports that Schaps currently holds the distinction of being the only female Haredi professor in Israel, and possibly the world.”
Hardly. There are plenty of female Hareidi professors in the world. And, I know of at least one aside from Professor Schaps in Israel.
The only religious female professor in the world. I find that hard to believe.
Professor Zelasko of Touro is Charedi and a woman
Israeli chareidi is not the same as american chareidi. Either way, can we congratulate someone without trying to dream.up.offenses?
Professor Elisheva Carlebach, currently of Columbia University is the wife of a Chassideshe Rebbe in Boro Park, Irh hakodesh! She is professor of medieval studies and has written extensively on European Jewish history. She is a frequent lecturer and author. Believe it or not, Hashem created women with brains!
This woman though religious and orthodox is by no means Chareidi. (Not even US style Chareidi-lite). The fact that she uses a pseudonym or a pen name proves it.
To # 13 The Mishna of marrying at 18 is adresed to men. Like the part of 13 for mitzvos (boys), 15 to ‘gemarah’ or at ’20 to find a career (lirdof)’. Actually very few poskim follow that Mishna.
Nevertheless this accomplishment will be portrayed in the Chareidi media as a success and proof that chareidim excel in both the religious and secular spheres. They will tout her accomplishments as proof that Chareidim do believe in secular education and have produced leaders in Secular society.
Why does she write under another name in the u.s.?
