It’s all part of a joint investigation between Homeland Security, the New York State Attorney General’s Office and the New York State Department of Health.

The alleged fraud involves the WIC (Women, Infant and Children) food stamp program.

Food Stamps recipients would go to certain stores and trade the stamps for money, sources said. They received 80 cents on a dollar, with the store pocketing the rest, D’Auria reported.

The stores were collecting on average 20,000 food stamp coupons a month, sources said. Most stores collect about 200 coupons a month.

Law enforcement sources said more than two dozen people are expected to be arrested in connection with the investigation on Wednesday.

And they better punish those who sold their coupons as well! All of us graciously support them so they can have healthy pregnancies and young children but here they are stealing and committing fraud. We the tax payers are the victims here and both the stores and the families receiving WIC should be punished to the greatest extent of the law, besides for paying us tax payers back and not being allowed to ever be on WIC or SNAP as they have proved they can’t use it responsibly.

please excuse my question–since Baruch Hashem I have never had food stamps–I thought they all had Benefits cards and that food stamps were included on those. So what do they mean by coupon?

It is a bizayon that frum people should use government assistance programs – welfare. If they are really poor than their fellow yidden should be helping them. If they are not really poor then they should not be using the programs that are meant for poor people. Also those people who deliberately make themselves poor by not working, should get off their chairs and get a job or go to school and learn a profession. These programs should only be used by people who have to deal with health issues or temporarily due to job loss. They should not be a way of life such as to support oneself in Kollel. Again if someone is genuinely poor despite making efforts to not be poor than the community should be helping them, not Uncle Sam and the community should be helping them in the spirit of V’Chai Achicha Imach. Hashem should help anyone who is truly poor enough that they legitimately qualify for these programs.

the worst part is they could be using the money to buy beer and cigs rather than getting healthy foods for their babies

Ok, so I get it people exchanged food for money, I bet that they are not rich people, rather they are suffering from the governments lack of creativity to create paying jobs and affordable housing & tuition.

I am baffled as to why Homeland Security (HSI) should be the investigative agency. Are these recipients of WIC benefits also suspected terrorists?

Maybe it comes to prove that these agencies overlap and are themselves a fraud using excessive force on low level criminals. They should be out there fighting violent criminals in Crown Heights.

To numbers 7&8: why am I a self hating jew? because it bothers me when my fellow people (those who do not need it) have zero shame when it comes to taking money from the goverment? Anyway you look at it, it’s thievery. I guess the reason you got worked up is that you are probably both guilty of this.
And to #10 – thank you for your support. 🙂

Sometimes, people who really need the assistance are embarrassed to apply. What is irking is watching people “work the system” when perhaps, they could really get a job to cover their costs. No one in this country wants anyone, young or old to go hungry. However, some comments on this site have pointed out people living on a high life style, including trips and fancy jewelry, taking advantage of government programs. Listen up, it’s not magic. If Yankel is collecting, Mutty has to be working and paying taxes to cover it. Pretty simple really. Not to mention the potential chillul Hashem.

Food stamps should also work like the WIC program where the recipient can purchase specific healthy choices is specific proportions. There’s no reason why the government should fund people’s soda, nosh, chips, chocolate, ice cream, cake etc. It should require balanced healthy purchasing if it is on the government’s dole. A certain amount towards produce, healthy carbohydrates, dairy, protein etc. They should hire nutritionists and doctors to revamp the system. This will also bring down the cost of healthcare associated with obesity. Have you seen how many very overweight or obese people are on food stamps?

looks like most people here have discovered what needs to be done to survive in america. either be filthy rich or dirt poor. health care comes first and if you cant afford it, then quit your job and get it. and cash isnt as much of a problem. waiter in any busy restaurant and you’ll make like 200 a day. the art of the chossid i call it. when the system collapses one day due to our foolish government, i’ll still be covered and all you middle class people will be crushed.

It’s all about honesty and integrity. If you can work, you should work. If you can’t for medical reasons then we have programs for you (and it better be a real medical issue, I know of someone who somehow can’t work but can exercise, do sports, play on the computer… There are plenty of jobs they qualify for). But if you will take the welfare, WIC, SNAP- please check your budget. Can you scrimp/save/cut back in any way? Do you send your kids to sleep away camp? Do you go to the bungalows? (No matter how cheap, it is still 2 rents, plus transportation and many incidentals).
