One such event was held today by the United Jewish Organizations (UJO) of Williamsburg, led by activist Rabbi Moshe Dovid Niederman.

At the UJO’s fourth annual Legislative Breakfast this morning at Williamsburg’s Continental hall, hundreds of community leaders attended from across the spectrum of New York’s ethnic communities. Black Hasidic hats mingled with yarmulkas of all types as well as bare heads, as elected officials from local, state and federal levels—and early contenders for the 2009 mayoral and comptroller’s races—mixed with the crowd.

Senator Charles Schumer, NY State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli and Mayor Michael Bloomberg led the list of speakers applauded by over 400 Williamsburg community leaders.

Also participating in the ceremony were NYC Comptroller Bill Thompson; Congressmen Ed Towns, Jerry Nadler and Anthony Weiner; Assemblymen Vito Lopez and Joe Lentol; State Senators Marty Conner and Kevin Parker; Borough Presidents Adolfo Carrion and Scott Stringer; Councilmen Simcha Felder, David Weprin , David Yassky, and Lew Fidler, Councilwomen Gale Brewer, Tish James and many other elected officials.

Event M.C. William Rapfogel gave the “City Leadership Award” to NYC Department of the Aging Commissioner Edwin Mendez-Santiago. Also receiving recognition were the Williamsburg Shomrim and David Pollock of the Jewish Community Relations Council of New York.

Attendees also heard reports from Hon. Warren L. Miller, Chairman of the Commission for the Preservation of America’s Heritage Abroad, and Hon. Gregg J. Rickman, Special Envoy to Monitor and Combat Anti-Semitism at the U.S. State Department. These federal officials pledged to increase their efforts to protect Jewish cemeteries abroad and to combat anti-Semitism.

The highlight of the event was the surprise appearance of Mayor Mike Bloomberg, who presented an award to CAU Assistant Commissioner Fred Kreizman, who is widely known in the Williamsburg community for his warm heart and 24-hour availability.

The Williamsburg Shomrim Patrol was also acknowledged as Bloomberg praised their tireless work.
